The Red Raiders started off the 2017 with a shutout of Viterbo University today 3-0. This is the first time since 2014 that they have opened the season with a win.
Northwestern got on the board in the 15th minute as
Isaac Wong was able to head home a cross from
Anselmo Kim after a great individual effort by Kim to beat his defenders 1v1. It is his 4th goal of his career and first goal for him scored off a header. Wong almost doubled his tally moments later off of another cross but was not able to get it by the keeper as his shoulder directed shot was saved.
The match was mostly in Northwestern's hands the rest of the first half. Their stifling defense did not allow Viterbo to generate much in the attack in either half, limiting the V-Hawks to 4 shots total with 3 on frame.Â
The second half went much the way of the Raiders as they once again, dominated possession but were not able to capitalize until the 73rd minute when Breno Fabbri received a pass from
Connor Gisby and was able to place the ball into the back of the net with ease. This was the 5th goal of Breno's NWC career.
The last goal came from
Anselmo Kim in the 88th minute after
Alex Schussman came down the wing and was able to find Anselmo at the PK spot. Anselmo did the rest and beat his one defender and finished from close range. This was Anselmo's 5th goal of his young collegiate career.
The second and third goals for NWC came after being a player down whenÂ
Tyler Limmer received his second yellow, and subsequent red card, in the 68th minute.Â
James Warren is credited with the shutout as
Matt Scott had to leave the game in the 81st minute when Scott cut his forehand on the post making a save.Â
The Red Raiders will look to add another win to their season on August 26 on the road at Graceland University at 2:30pm.Â
