Northwestern College hit four home runs and received quality starts from both Kayla Tindall and Morgan Means to earn a sweep over Midland this afternoon, 13-3 (5) and 8-0 (6). The Red Raiders move up to second in the current GPAC standings with a 7-3 record, 18-15 overall.
Jensen Boger hit two home runs, including a third-inning grand slam, in leading the Red Raiders to the 13-3, game one win. Boger also belted a two-run home run in the fourth en route to a career-high six RBIs. Jessica Rayela ended the game with a three-run, walk-off home run in the fifth, her fourth of the season. The senior finished with two runs scored and four RBIs.
Kayla Tindall gave up eight hits and three runs in earning her team-leading 11th win of the season. Tindall walked one and struck out one.
Trailing 1-0, Northwestern loaded the bases with two outs in the third off Midland starter Skyler Peterson (8-8) and Boger coming to the plate. The junior then hit the 1-0 pitch over the left-field fence, giving the Red Raiders a 4-1 lead.
Northwestern scored four more runs off Peterson in the fourth, sparked by a two-run home run by Boger. Midland answered with two runs in the top of the fifth on a double by Bailey Hartman, cutting the NW lead to 8-3.
Jessica Sandbulte led off the Red Raiders five-run fifth with a double that chased Peterson from the game. Relief pitcher Renee Ramirez then walked Mons Figueroa and both Sandbulte and Figueroa came around to score after a Midland error and a double steal after Madison Beaver reached base. Following a walk to Jaclyn Smith, Rayela ended the game with a three-run home run, scoring both Beaver and Smith.
Katie Elliott hit a two-run home run and Morgan Means pitched her third career shutout in leading Northwestern to an 8-0 win in game two.
Leading 1-0, Elliott hit a two-run shot off Ramirez (3-4) in the Red Raiders three-run fourth inning, her fourth home run of the season. Elliott, who reached base in all three at-bats, has now hit safely in four straight games. Beaver added an RBI double later in the inning.
Northwestern totaled eight hits in game two, led by Beaver, who went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Six NW players, Smith, Boger, Petrauskas, Elliott, Sandbulte and Figueroa) all had one hit each.
Means (7-8) scattered six hits and struck out one in recording her first shutout of the season, third for her career.
Midland (2-4, 12-16) was led by Katie Heard and Bailey Hartman who totaled three hits each over the two games.
