Northwestern College held off a late-inning rally to defeat Doane 6-5 in game one of a GPAC doubleheader played today in Crete, Neb. The Red Raiders lost game two 7-0 and move to 8-8 in conference play, 21-20 overall.
The Red Raiders held a 4-0 lead after three innings, 6-2 after the top of the sixth before Doane came back with a run in the sixth and two more in the seventh with the tying run at second before a groundout ended the game.
Kayla Tindall improved to 13-9 on the year, giving up 11 hits and five runs in the full seven innings. The junior struck out four and all five runs scored against her were in the final three innings.
Northwestern totaled 10 hits, led by Mons Figueroa who went 4-for-4 with an RBI and run scored. Madison Beaver went 2-for-3 with an RBI and run and Bri Petrauskas also totaled two hits.
The Red Raiders grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Beaver led off with a single and came around to score off a sacrifice fly by Jaclyn Smith.
Northwestern added three runs in the third, getting an RBI single by Jessica Rayela and a sacrifice fly by Cheyenne Wilcke. The Red Raiders scored their final runs in the sixth off a single by Figueroa and a Doane error on a ball hit by Beaver.
Hannah Feagler (5-3) took the loss for Doane, giving up all 10 hits and six runs in 6.2 innings. Heather Ramirez, Nicole Fernandez and Jacque Garza all had three hits for Doane.
Feagler came back with a complete-game shutout in Doane's 7-0 win in game two. Feagler gave up 10 hits and struck out three in improving to 6-3.
Morgan Means (8-10) took the loss, scattering 11 hits and seven runs in six innings. Doane scored two runs in each of the first two innings off of Means and put the game away with a three-run fifth.
Katie Elliott and Smith led Northwestern with two hits in game two.
