Northwestern College picked up a big sweep (9-0, 15-12) against Mount Marty in a GPAC doubleheader played tonight in Orange City, Iowa. With the wins, the Red Raiders clinched a spot in the eight-team GPAC postseason tournament that will begin next week. They improve to 10-8 in conference play, 23-20 overall.Â
Kayla Tindall (14-9) pitched her fourth shutout of the season in game one, giving up four hits and striking out four in five innings.Â
Seven different Red Raiders had one hit, led by Jessica Rayela who hit her fifth home run of the season on a two-run shot in the first inning. Cheyenne Wilcke added a solo home run in the third and Jessica Sandbulte had a two-run single.Â
Amber Krause (5-11) took the loss, giving up four hits and four runs in two-plus innings. Dani Lowe had two hits and Krause had a single for the Lancers.Â
Northwestern erupted for 10 runs in the bottom of the first inning to defeat the Lancers 15-12 in a wild game two. The Red Raiders sent 13 players to the plate, totaling six hits and four walks, in the 10-run first inning. Jensen Boger had a two-run single, Katie Elliott belted a three-run double and Mons Figueroa hit a three-run home run all in the first inning.
Mount Marty came back with five runs in the second, four off Red Raider starter Morgan Means, who left with one out in the inning. Amanda McCafferty had a two-run single and Krause added an RBI single.
Leading 10-5, Northwestern added five more runs in the third off a two-run single by Boger and a two-run double by Bri Petrauskas.Â
Mount Marty stormed back once again, plating seven runs in the fifth inning. Kelsey Mitera hit a grand slam off Tindall and Jennifer Mitera hit a two-run single to bring the Lancers within three. Means came back into the game to get the final seven outs, pitching scoreless sixth and seventh innings.
Means (9-11) gave up three hits and five runs in 3.2 innings. Tindall allowed eight hits and seven runs in 3.1 innings of relief.Â
Boger and Figueroa totaled three hits each and Elliott went 2-for-2 with two runs and three RBIs. Boger drove in four and scored a pair of runs.Â
Booke Becker (6-6) took the loss, giving up four hits and eight runs in 1/3 inning. Jennifer Mitera wetn 3-for-5 with two RBIs.Â
