Madison Beaver and Jessica Sandbulte both hit home runs and Kayla Tindall pitched her ninth complete game of the season in leading Northwestern to an 8-1 win over College of Saint Mary in game one of a GPAC doubleheader played today in Orange City, Iowa. The Red Raiders dropped game two 5-1.
Northwestern moves to 4-2 in the GPAC, 15-14 overall.
Beaver led off the Red Raiders' six-run third inning with a solo home run, her second of the season, putting her team in front for good. Bri Petrauskas, Katie Elliott and Sandbulte followed with three straight RBI doubles and the Red Raiders scored the final run off a College of Saint Mary error.
Sandbulte capped the Red Raiders scoring with a two-run home run in the top of the seventh, scoring Elliott from first.
For the eighth time this season, Northwestern posted 10+ hits, totaling 11, five for extra-bases. Sandbulte went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Beaver, Elliott and Petrauskas all had two hits each.
Tindall (9-7) pitched brilliantly in earning her ninth complete game of the season. The junior gave up four hits and struck out five. The Flames scored their only run in the seventh inning on an RBI groundout by Jaylee Lester.
Northwestern's bats cooled off with just three hits in its 5-1, game two loss. The Red Raiders scored their lone run in the top of the second when Cheyenne Wilcke scored on an RBI groundout by Elliott.
College of Saint Mary used the long ball, hitting three home runs over the final three innings, to get the come-from-behind win. Brittney Banks tied the game at one with a solo shot in the fourth and Nicki Larsen followed with a solo home run to lead off the fifth for a 2-1 lead. The Flames added three insurance runs in the sixth, the first on another home run by Banks.
Morgan Means (6-7) gave up seven hits and five runs in 5.1 innings. The senior struck out two. Tindall recorded the final two outs for head coach Chris Nachtigall's squad.
Larsen earned the win, improving to 6-5 on the year. The junior allowed three hits, one run and struck out three.
Beaver had two of the three NW hits, both singles.
