Red Raiders Defeat No.4 St. Gregory's in Game One; Split With Cavaliers

Northwestern College rallied with a four-run seventh inning to defeat No. 4 St. Gregory's 7-4 in game one of a doubleheader played in Shawnee, Okla. The Red Raiders lost game two 3-2 and move to 7-6 on the year.

Trailing 4-3 heading into the seventh, Northwestern recorded four consecutive hits to start the final inning. Bri Petrauskas led off with a single and came around to score on a double by Jessica Rayela. Singles by Jaclyn Smith and Jessica Sandbulte led to another run and put the Red Raiders in front for good, 5-4. Katie Elliott added an RBI double and Amanda Everhart drove in the final run on a sacrifice fly.

Morgan Means shut down the Cavaliers over the final 3.2 innings to pick up the win in relief. Means gave up five hits and struck out one. Kayla Tindall pitched the first 3.1 innings and was cruising until giving up four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Rayela paced Northwestern's 11-hit attack, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Both Jensen Boger and Elliott had two hits and an RBI.

Northwestern managed just two hits against Cavaliers' starter Bryn Houlton in its 3-2 game two loss. Houlton walked two, struck out eight and allowed two unearned runs in the full seven innings.

Fresh of the momentum from its come-from-behind win in game one, Northwestern took advantage of two Cavaliers' errors in the first inning to grab a 2-0 lead. Rayela had the only true hit in the inning, a one-out single, and both she and Beaver later came around to score. Sandbulte had the only other hit for NWC, a single in the fourth inning.

Means pitched well despite the loss, giving up five hits and three runs, two earned, in 3.2 innings. Tindall pitched the final 3.1 innings of scoreless relief.

Northwestern will play Bethany in LIndsborg, Kan. on Tuesday, March 7 at 4/6pm.
