Smith's Walkoff Single Gives Northwestern Game Two Win

Jaclyn Smith hit a walkoff single in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Northwestern a 2-1, extra-innings win in game two of a GPAC doubleheader played tonight in Orange City, Iowa. The Red Raiders lost game one 4-1.

Northwestern moves to 3-1 in GPAC play, 14-11 overall and Briar Cliff is now 2-4 in the conference, 8-17 overall.

Down 1-0 heading into the seventh, junior Katie Elliott belted a 1-0 pitch over the rightfield fence for her second home run of the season and tied the game at one. Jessica Sandbulte followed with a walk and Renee Choquette hit a pinch-hit single that advance Sandbulte to second and chased BCU starter Summer Williams from the game. Northwestern failed to score another run in the inning, however, against reliever Ciara Dotzler, who recorded three groundball outs to get out of the jam.

Winning pitcher Morgan Means (6-5) pitched a scoreless eighth for NWC and Bri Petrauskas led off with a double to shallow centerfield, making a great hustle play to slide into second just ahead of the throw. Sam Wielenga came to run for Petrauskas at second and came around to score the winning run on Smith's single.

Means scattered 10 hits and gave up just one run in pitching the full eight innings. She did not record a walk or a strikeout.

Six different Red Raiders had one hit in game two, led by Elliott with the home run, the only extrabase hit for either team.

Danielle Ishii and Brooke French led BCU with three hits each. Williams allowed four hits and one run in six-plus innings.

Northwestern was held to three hits in game one, a double by Jessica Rayela and singles by Petrauskas and Elliott.

Williams went the distance for the Chargers, striking out two and walking two in the full seven innings.

With Briar Cliff already leading 1-0, the Chargers added three insurance runs in the sixth, all off a bases-clearing double by French.

Northwestern answered with its only run in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single by Petrauskas. Kayla Tindall (8-6) pitched well in defeat, giving up seven hits and three earned runs, striking out four.
