No.15 Northwestern College outscored Dordt 24-16 in the fourth quarter to earn a 73-68 come-from-behind win in a GPAC women's basketball match-up played tonight at the Bultman Center.
The Red Raiders, now 4-1 in conference play and 7-4 overall, were led by
Kassidy De Jong with a game-high 20 points, going 8-for-15 from the floor.
Anna Kiel poured in 18 points and both
Darbi Gustafson and
Renee Maneman netted 11 points each.
Down by seven after a three-pointer by Defenders guard Sienna Stamness, Northwestern began its comeback with four straight points by Kiel and a three-point play De Jong that tied the score at 47. Knotted again at 49, a Payton Harmsen three-pointer near the end of the third quarter put Dordt up 52-49 at the end of the period.
Northwestern followed with six straight points to start the fourth, beginning with a basket by
Haley Birks and finishing with back-to-back field goals by De Jong, for their first lead since early in the second quarter . Another three-pointer by Harmsen tied the game at 57 but the Red Raiders grabbed the lead for good with a jumper in the lane by Gustafson on their next possession. Still a three-point game (69-66) with one minute left,
Renee Maneman knocked down a three-pointer with the shot clock winding down to push the lead to six and clinch the come-from-behind win for the Red Raiders.
Overall shooting percentages were relatively similar for the game with Northwestern at 48% compared to 47% by the Defenders. Dordt had the big edge from beyond the arc, making 6-of-13 three-pointers, and the Red Raiders just 2-for-10 (20%).
Gustafson pulled down a team-high eight rebounds and three Red Raiders (Kiel, Danner and De Jong) grabbed four each. Northwestern was outrebounded (35-31) for the first time since the Mayville State game, a string of eight games. Maneman dished out 11 assists, the senior's fourth game in double figures this season.
Dordt was led by Rachel Evavold with 14 points and eight boards and Stamness added 13, going 3-for-3 from beyond the arc.
The teams played a close first half that featured eight ties and 10 lead changes over the first 20 minutes. Dordt held a one-point advantage at the first break (19-18) and the Defenders built up the largest lead of the opening half (36-31) after two free throws by Erika Feenstra with 30 seconds left. Northwestern made it a three-point game with a jumper by Gustafson just before intermission, 36-33.
