17th-ranked Northwestern College suffered its first loss of the season Friday night, coming up short against No.9 Jamestown 74-59 in a match-up played in Jamestown, N.D. The Red Raiders are now 1-1 on the year and Jamestown improves to 3-1.
Kassidy De Jong led the Red Raiders with 15 points and
Darbi Gustafson netted 13 in the losing effort. Both players pulled down a team-high five rebounds.
Haley Birks and
Paige Danner contributed nine points each and
Breana Schuiteman came of the bench to score six.
How It Happened...
Northwestern held an early 8-2 advantage but the host Jimmies went on a 20-2 run, led by the duo of Bry Woodside and Alli Jablonsky who combined for 16 points during the 6-minute run; Jamestown led 26-13 by the end of the first quarter.
A 12-0 Jamestown run at the beginning of the second quarter extended its lead to 25-points (38-13) after a four-point play by Jablonsky with six minutes left in the first half; the Red Raiders trimmed the deficit to 18 (38-20), getting five straight points from Gustafson. Jamestown guard Paige Emmel knocked down a three-pointer just before the half ended to make the score 41-20.
Northwestern outscored the hosts 14-7 to make it a 14-point lead (48-34) by the end of the third quarter; defensively, the Red Raiders held Jamestown to just 19% shooting in the third period.
Gustafson scored on the opening possession of the fourth to make it a 12-point game but Northwestern did not get any closer; an 11-2 Jamestown run pushed the lead back to 21 over the next three minutes and the teams traded baskets the rests of the way.
