Red Raiders Resume GPAC Play At Midland

Game Time...Northwestern College resumes GPAC play with a road test against Midland on Wednesday night, Jan. 4. Tip-off in Fremont, Neb. is scheduled for 6pm. Northwestern has won two straight games and is currently in ninth place in the GPAC with a 3-5 record, 11-5 overall. Midland has won five consecutive games and is tied for fourth in the GPAC with a 4-3 record, 11-4 overall.

All-Time...Northwestern is 35-14 all-time against Midland, dating back to the first ever match-up in the 1977-78 season. The Red Raiders are 9-1 over the last 10 games against Midland and own a 29-1 advantage since the 98-99 season.

Since losing back-to-back games to the University of Nebraska Kearney and Mount Marty, Midland has rattled off five straight wins, its longest win streak since the 2006-07 season. Midland has defeated Dordt, Briar Cliff, Morningside, Bellevue and Oklahoma Wesleyan during the current streak, all in the month of December.

Gilbert, in his third season as the Warriors' head coach, returns four starters and six players from a 2015-16 team that finished tied for 10th in the GPAC with a 5-17 record, 7-22 overall. Prior to coming to Midland, Gilbert served as an assistant at Nebraska-Lincoln and as a head coach at Mount Mercy (Iowa).

Northwestern Notes...

Earning votes in the last NAIA Division II Coaches' poll, Northwestern is currently in ninth place in the GPAC with a 3-5 record as they start the second part of their conference schedule. They have won two straight games, both in non-conference play, to improve to 11-5 on the year. 

Northwestern is scoring 77 points per game, third most in the GPAC, while shooting 45% from the field. They are fourth in the conference in rebound margin (+6) and hold opponents to 67 points per game.

Kassidy De Jong leads the team in scoring (22ppg) but has missed the last five games due to injury. De Jong also averages nearly eight rebounds per game and is shooting 50% from the field. Haley Birks ranks sixth in the league in scoring (14.6) and leads the GPAC with 22 blocked shots. Birks pulls down 6.3 boards per game. Darbi Gustafson leads the GPAC with six double-doubles and is the top rebounder in the GPAC at 9.4 per game. She scores 12.2 points per game while both Anna Kiel (12.5) and Paige Danner (10.9) also score in double figures. Renee Maneman leads the NAIA with 123 assists and scores 9.6 points per game.
