Red Raiders Finish 2-2 At Bruins Labor Day Classic

Northwestern College went 2-2 at the Bruins Labor Day Classic, played this weekend at Bellevue University in Bellevue, Neb. 

Friday matches:

The Red Raiders dropped a pair of matches on Friday, losing to (RV) Grand View and Peru State, both in straight sets. 

Against Grand View, the Red Raiders hit .193, finishing with 33 kills in 88 attacks. Jessica Jensen put down a team-high nine kills and both Lauryn Hilger and Andrea Horstman totaled eight kills. Jillian Estes led the backrow effort with 13 digs. Individual scores were 25-18, 25-17 and 25-17. 

Hilger led all players with 17 kills in the Red Raiders' 3-0 (28-26, 25-17, 26-24) loss to Peru State (9-1) in the evening match-up. Hilger hit nearly .400 over the three sets and also totaled seven digs. Jensen was also in double figures with 11 and Estes was the leader in the backrow with 17 digs. 

Saturday matches:

Northwestern came back with two wins on the final day, sweeping both Saint Francis (Ill.) and Montana State-Northern. 

Horstman was brilliant in the afternoon match against Saint Francis, going for a career-high 20 kills, 10 digs  and six aces, her first double-double. Hilger was effective as well with 16 kills and three ace serves and Jessa Doom lofted up 38 assists. The Red Raiders hit .378 and totaled a season-high 10 aces. Individual scores: 25-22, 25-18, 25-21.

The Red Raiders downed Montana State-Northern 25-21, 25-20 and 25-18 in the final match of the Invite late Saturday night. Three players recorded double figures in kills, led by Hilger with 15 and Horstman at 14. Jensen put down 10 while both Hilger and Estes had 12 digs.
