Lauryn Hilger put down a match-high 16 kills in leading Northwestern to a 3-0 road win (25-18, 25-16, 25-22) over Mount Marty in a conference match-up played in Yankton, S.D.Â
The win moves the Red Raiders to 1-1 in the conference, 9-10 overall, while Mount Marty slips to 0-3 in conference play, 5-6 overall.Â
Northwestern hit .275 for the match and was led by Hilger with 16 kills for a .393 hitting percentage.Â
5-0 Run Keys Win in Back and Forth First Set
The teams traded runs in a back-and-forth first set. Down 6-1, the Red Raiders charge back, serving five consecutive points to tie the set at six. Northwestern went up 14-10 but Mount Marty responded with five straight points to take the lead back, 15-14. The Red Raiders, however, scored six of the next seven points, including five straight served by Jessa Doom, to take control of the set and win 25-18.Â
Strong Play All Around Keys Second Set Win
Northwestern led from start to finish in a well-played second set. The Red Raiders hit .407 and limited the host Lancers to just five kills and five errors (0%). Caley Vink had four kills and 1.5 blocks to lead NWC.
Red Raiders Hold On For Sweep
The Red Raiders continued their strong play in the third, getting out to an 18-11 lead. Mount Marty battled back, however, scoring seven of the next eight points, to make it a one-point game, 19-18. The teams traded sideouts until Northwestern scored back-to-back points and led 23-20 after a kill by Jessica Jensen. The Red Raiders went on to win 25-22.Â
