Northwestern College handed Concordia its first home loss with a 93-89 overtime win in a GPAC match-up played this afternoon in Seward, Neb. The Red Raiders have won 14 straight games and remain unbeaten in the GPAC with a 7-0 record, 14-1 overall. Concordia falls to 2-5 in the GPAC, 7-6 overall. 

Colton Kooima led Northwestern with 26 points and was one of four Red Raiders who scored in double figures. Kooima made four of his eight three-point attempts and also grabbed six rebounds. Riley Francis netted 15 points, going 3-for-5 from the three-point arc, and both Derek Buysse and Parker Mulder scored 12.

How It Happened...

The game was close throughout and featured 18 ties and 12 lead changes; Northwestern had the largest lead for either team (6) at three different points in the second half

Concordia bulit up its largest lead of the game (39-34) just before half but Northwestern closed on a 7-2 run, capped by a Kooima three-pointer, for a 41-41 score at the break

The teams traded baskets for the first eight minutes of the second half; a small Concordia run built the Bulldogs lead to four (67-63) at the 10-minute mark

Northwestern answered with its best run, outscoring the hosts 14-4 to take a 77-71 advantage after a basket by Justin Van Kalsbeek with 5:26 left in regulation

With the Red Raiders still up six (82-76), a Seth Curran three-pointer followed by a jumper by Eli Ziegler made it a one-point game with 25 seconds to go. 

Parker Mulder converted a 1-and-1 with six seconds left, pushing the lead back to three (84-81) but Concordia sent the game into overtime after a Tanner Shuck three-pointer at the buzzer, tying the game at 84

A pair of free throws by Shuck gave Concordia its last lead, 88-87, at the 3-minute mark of overtime. Buysse knocked down a jumper on the Red Raiders next possession, giving Northwestern the lead for good, 89-88.

Kooima drained a long three-pointer after a Buysse offensive rebound and kickout pass, putting Northwestern in front by four with 30 seconds left.

By the Numbers...

Northwestern shot 47% from the field and three-point arc (10/21); Concordia shot 48% from the floor and 46% (14/30) from the three-point line.

The Red Raiders controlled the glass, especially in the second half and overtime period, outrebounding Concordia 43-32 for the game; Northwestern pulled down 14 offensive boards.

Kooima tallied his ninth 20+ point game of the season and has scored in double figures in all but one game

Mulder scored a career-high 12 points, making 5-of-6 field goal attempts; the sophomore  also grabbed five rebounds and dished out four assists

Both Kooima and Buysse have made a three-pointer in all but one game this season; Francis has at least on three-pointer in all but three games

Jordan Baker pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, giving him 777 for his career, ninth place all-time; Baker also passed Mark Johnson (1971-75) and into 28th place all-time in career scoring with 1,254 points

Kooima moved up three spots in the all-time scoring charts; the junior now has 1,299 points, good for 24th place; Kooima passed Rick Vander Berg (1,280), Lance Reinke (1,289) and Cody Kuipers (1,295).

Northwestern has now surpassed the 13-game win streak set back in 2007-08; they are two wins shy of matching its 16-game win streak set in 2004-05

Concordia was led by Ziegler with 28 points; 16 coming in the first half; Shuck added 24 and Chandler Folkerts chipped in 14
