Records Fall In Red Raiders Win Over Dordt

Box Score

Northwestern College scored 50 unanswered second-half points in a record-setting 64-16 win over Dordt College in a GPAC football match-up played this afternoon in Sioux Center, Iowa. The Red Raiders earned their third straight win and improved to 3-1 in GPAC play, 3-3 overall.

Two school records and nearly a third in a dominant performance against the host Defenders. Northwestern totaled 676 yards of offense, breaking the old record of 649 yards set in 2012 in its 49-0 season-opening win over Southwestern. The 64 points scored is the second most all-time, one shy of the record 65 scored against Concordia in 1994.

Senior Jonathan Kodama had a career-day, throwing for a school-record 486 yards and three touchdowns, breaking the old mark (454 yards) set by Jay McKinstrey against University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse in 1985. Kodama completed 24-of-31 passes and surpassed 400 yards for the second time this season. He also has a pair of 300-yard passing games.

The Red Raiders had three players total over 100 yards receiving for the first time in over 25 years as Levi Ettleman (5/135), Levi TeBrink (5/118) and T.J Spykstra (5/102) all surpassed the century mark. Both Ettleman and TeBrink set new career-highs while Spykstra totaled over 100 yards for the third straight game.

Leading 14-8 at the half, Northwestern scored on all seven of its offensive possessions in a second half that they scored 50 unanswered points and outscored the Defenders 50-8.

Paul Hutson began the second half scoring spree with a three-yard run that capped a three-play, 55-yard drive. Following a Dordt punt, Kodama connected with Reggie Carter for a 29-yard scoring pass, their second of the game, to put the Red Raiders up 30-8 after a successful two-point conversion. Jacob Kalagonis scored on a six-yard run followed by a 25-yard touchdown pass to Ettleman from Craig Bruinsma, who filled in for Kodama after he was shaken up on a previous play.

Josh Wilson scored on the first play of the fourth quarter, taking it in from two yards out to put NWC in front 50-8. Kodama threw his final touchdown pass on the Red Raiders next drive as he connected with Ettleman for a 31-yard pass with nine minutes left to go. Wilson capped the scoring with an impressive 37-yard run at the five-minute mark. Dordt added a late touchdown on a 15-yard run by backup quarterback Danial White with under a minute left.

Northwestern gained 600 yards of offense for the second straight game, totaling 158 on the ground and 518 through the air. Kalagonis led the ground game with 16 carries for 79 yards and two touchdowns and Wilson amassed four carries for 51 yards and two scores. Reggie Carter added three catches for 65 yards and two touchdowns.

The Raider D was led by Tanner Machacek with eight tackles and both Jerod Hansen and Kyle Van Ginkel had 5.5 stops. Josh Treybal registered one of the Red Raiders two sacks and Sam Van Ginkel forced and recovered a fumble.

Dordt's NAIA-leading ground game churned out 327 yards and featured Bryce Lidtka with 21 carries for 131 yards and a score. Brock Lamle added 12 carries for 74 yards and completed 7/20 passes for 125 yards.

Northwestern opened up a 14-0 lead after the first quarter, scoring on a two-yard run by Kalagonis and a 29-yard reception by Carter. Dordt scored its first touchdown after a 59-yard run by Lidtka.

The Red Raiders will head to Mitchell, S.D. for a showdown against No.16 Dakota Wesleyan on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 1pm.
