Scott Phelps joined the Raiders Track and Field staff for the 2021-22 season after coaching in the high school ranks since 1993 at Kingsley-Pierson High School coaching the throwers. He joins the Northwestern staff where he will also coach the Raider Throwers.Â
"I chose Northwestern College because all of the NWC graduates I know all seem to have been placed well occupationally," noted Phelps. "They also all seem to be fulfilled in their lives as a result of solid family orientation based off of a strong Faith-based foundation."
His coaching career commenced at Kingsley-Pierson High School in 1993 as a Throws coach where he coached consistent WVC Conference Championship caliber teams. The teams won multiple district championships, both boys and girls. Teams have earned several top-3 trophy State Meet finishes, including the 2017 Boys State Championship.
He has coached athletes that have set All-Time All Class Iowa High School State Meet records in Girls shot put and discus, Boys shot put and discus. In his time in the high school ranks, he has coached seven national championships, 10 All-American honorees, and multiple Gatorade Iowa Track & Field Athlete or year awards.
At Northwestern, he coached NAIA Qualifier Becca Bindert in the Shot Put and Discus in 2021.Â
Â
Phelps was a four-year athlete for Iowa State's track and field program, while medaling four times in the Big Eight conference meet in both the discus and shot put. While at Iowa State, he earned Honorable Mention All-Conference honors in the discus. When Phelps graduated from Iowa State in 1991, he sat second in Iowa State's track and field's record books in the discus with a mark of 187-07, which currently sits seventh today.Â
His favorite Bible verse is John 3:16 because "it is Christianity in a nutshell and illustrates leading by example. I know of a person who always set their alarm for 3:16 A.M. as a daily reminder of sacrifice. I think of this often to always remember that there is a higher power."
Phelps is married to his wife, Laura, and they have three children: Colt, Kiana, and Nick. He graduated from Iowa State University in 1991 with a degree in business administration with an emphasis in finance. If not coaching you can find me on Lake Okoboji or in Timber by my acreage.
