Raiders Drop Double-Header to Dordt

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa - A late week GPAC showdown between Dordt and Northwestern ended in a sweep for the Defenders as they defeated the Raiders 6-1 and 11-9 on Thursday night.

Game 1: NWC 1 - Dordt 6

How It Happened:
Dordt opened the game with a run in the first inning with an RBI single. The Raiders were held scoreless in their half of the inning. In the second inning, the Raiders evened the score when Allison Koontz tripled to right field and was brought home by Sydney Jacobs' bunt single. The Defenders regained the lead in the fourth inning with another RBI single to take a 2-1 lead.

The seventh inning saw Dordt put the final nails in the coffin against Northwestern. The Defenders loaded up the bases before a clearing them with a grand slam. The Raiders were unable to respond in their final at-bats, ending the game 6–1 in favor of Dordt.

How It Happened:
Northwestern took an early lead as Ava Gross was hit by a pitch and later scored on a fielder's choice. Rylee Bomgaars would also score on an RBI single by Paige Kingery to lead 2-0 at the end of the first. In the second inning, Jenny Luevano scored on a sacrifice fly by Tatum Schmalbeck, extending its lead despite Dordt scoring once. The inning concluded with the Raiders ahead 3–1.

Kavri Van Kekerix hit a three-run home run in the third, bringing in Aly Vortherms and Cassidy Gors, which increased Northwestern's total to 6–2 after the Defenders managed another run.

The fourth inning saw a shift in momentum. Dordt scored eight runs, overtaking Northwestern. The Raiders attempted to strike back as Allison Koontz hit a triple, driving in two runs, and Cassidy Gors singled to bring in another. The inning ended with the Defenders leading 10–9. In the sixth inning, Dordt extended its lead with an additional run, bringing the score to 11–9, a lead it held through a scoreless seventh inning for both teams.

  • Back-to-back games with a triple for Allison Koontz.
  • Kavri Van Kekerix was the only Raider to notch two+ hits.
  • Van Kekerix and Koontz both had three RBIs.
  • Ava Gross has a stolen base in three of the last four games.
  • After no errors in the first game, the two teams combined for five errors.
