Northwestern Holds Off Hastings for Home Sweep

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – Northwestern used a six-run inning in game two to grab momentum and secure the sweep at home.

How It Happened
Northwestern secured a 6–4 victory over Hastings in game one on Monday. The Raiders capitalized on nine hits and a home run while maintaining a lead throughout the game.
 
The Raiders started strong in the first inning. Cassidy Gors walked and advanced on an error, setting up an RBI sacrifice bunt by Paige Kingery that allowed Gors to score, putting the Red Raiders ahead 1–0.
 
In the second inning, Faith Kacmarynski's walk and subsequent advancement on an error led to a scoring opportunity. Sydney Jacobs singled, bringing Kacmarynski home due to a left-field error. Allison Koontz followed with an RBI single, scoring Jacobs and extending Northwestern's lead to 3–0.
 
The third inning saw Kavri Van Kekerix and Rylee Bomgaars reach base with a walk and a bunt single, respectively. After both advanced on a double steal, Faith Kacmarynski's single scored them both, widening the margin to 5–0.
 
Cassidy Gors added to the Raiders' lead in the fourth inning with a solo home run, the first of her career, making it 6–0.
 
The Broncos mounted a comeback in the sixth inning, scoring four runs. Lexie Mudloff and Lauren Lee contributed with singles, followed by a sacrifice fly from Kaylee Pinneo. Raygan Hoos and Graecy Graf added RBIs, but the rally fell short.

How It Happened
The Raiders rallied with six runs in the third inning to catapult to a 10-7 win in the second game of Monday's doubleheader.
 
Hastings took an early lead in the second inning, scoring five runs. Ana Medeiros walked and eventually crossed the plate on a walk by Graecy Graf. Katyn Kappler then delivered a two-RBI single, and additional runs scored on a throwing error and a single by Lexie Mudloff, ending the inning with the Broncos up 5-0.
 
Northwestern answered back in the third inning, tallying six runs to tie the game. Myla Murphy started the rally with a bunt that fell for a single, reaching third on an error. Jenny Luevano's groundout brought Murphy home, and Tatum Schmalbeck's double cleared the bases, scoring Allison Koontz and Sydney Jacobs. Paige Kingery followed with a double, driving in Schmalbeck. Faith Kacmarynski's single and a passed ball allowed two more runs to score, tying the game at 6-6.
 
The sixth inning saw the Raiders pull ahead for good. Berkley Johannsen, in a pinch-run situation, stole second and scored on an error. Sydney Jacobs' bunt single led to another run, and Allison Koontz capped the inning with a two-run homer to left field, putting the Red Raiders in a commanding 10-6 lead.
 
The Broncos added one more run in the seventh inning, but Northwestern secured a 10-7 victory.

GAME NOTES:
  • Tatum Schmalbeck earned her 10th win in the circle, giving up two hits in four innings pitched.
  • Paige Kingery went 2-for-3 with a double, her 14th multi-hit game of the year.
  • Schmalbeck drove in two runs on an RBI double.
  • Allison Koontz scored twice and hit a home run. Her hit streak now stands at 13 games.
  • Myla Murphy collected two hits and scored twice.
  • Sydney Jacobs hit 1-for-2 with two runs and an RBI.
