Raiders Battle Back to Earn Split with DWU

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – No. 23 Northwestern split its GPAC-opening doubleheader on Wednesday night at the American State Bank Sports Complex.

How It Happened
Northwestern fell to Dakota Wesleyan 8–3 at the ASB Sports Complex in Wednesday's GPAC opener.

The Tigers took an early lead in the first inning as Lydia Yost doubled and later scored on Macy Moore's single, making it 1–0 after the first.

In the third, the Raiders responded with two runs. Allison Koontz doubled and was driven in by Paige Kingery's double. Kingery scored later on an error by the right fielder, knotting the score at 2–2. However, DWU added two runs in their half, reclaiming the lead at 3–2.

The fourth frame saw the Tigers extend their lead significantly. Dusti Draper tripled and scored, followed by consecutive hits and an error that brought home three more runs, closing the inning with a lead of 8–2.
 
The Red Raiders added a run in the sixth inning when Aly Vortherms, pinch running, scored on Ava Gross's single. However, the gap remained too large to overcome, as the final score stood at 8–3.

How It Happened
Northwestern secured a decisive 8-0 victory over Dakota Wesleyan in game two of Wednesday's conference opener. Tatum Schmalbeck pitched a five-inning shutout, allowing only four hits while the Northwestern offense capitalized early, scoring six runs in the first three innings.

The game began with the Raiders taking an early lead in the first inning. Ava Gross singled, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on an Allison Koontz double to right field, putting Northwestern ahead 1-0 after the first half inning.

In the second, the Raiders extended their lead as Kavri Van Kekerix singled and was driven in by a Sydney Jacobs double. Myla Murphy and Gross followed with base hits, adding two more to the scoreboard to stretch the lead to 4-0.

The Red Raiders continued to build momentum in the third inning when Paige Kingery walked and scored on a Van Kekerix single. Later, Van Kekerix scored on a bases-loaded walk by Gross, pushing Northwestern's advantage to 6-0 after three.

The scoring resumed in the fifth inning as the Raiders added two more runs. Jacobs walked and scored on a Gross single. Murphy also scored, aided by an error during the play. Schmalbeck then shut down the Tigers in order in the bottom half to conclude the game in five innings.

GAME NOTES:
  • Ava Gross hit a perfect 3-for-3, driving in three runs, scoring once, and drawing a walk.
  • Gross has accumulated three consecutive multi-hit games and extended her hitting streak to 10 games.
  • Tatum Schmalbeck pitched a shutout in the circle, scattering four hits over five innings.
  • Allison Koontz and Sydney Jacobs both doubled.
  • Jacobs scored twice and took two walks.
  • Myla Murphy went 2-for-2 and scored a pair of runs.
  • Kavri Van Kekerix collected two hits, an RBI, and a stolen base.
Up Next: The Raiders will head to Sioux Falls for a doubleheader against College of Saint Mary at the Sanford Sports Complex. First pitch time is TBD.
