Seven Stolen Bases Spotlight Saturday's Win

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa - It was an up-and-down Saturday for the Raiders as they started their day with a big 8-1 victory over Valley City State before falling 4-1 in a rematch against Mayville State.

Game 1: NWC 8 - VCSU 1
Win: Allison Koontz (8-1)
Loss: M. Hazelton (3-2)

How It Happened:
In the first inning, the Raiders would waste no time as Rylee Bomgaars singled before stealing second. She'd be sent home on an RBI double from Ava Gross. Gross later scored on an RBI single by Alyssa Koontz. Faith Kacmarynski added another run after stealing home. The inning closed with Northwestern leading 3-0.

The third inning saw Valley City State hit a solo home run, narrowing the gap to 3-1. The Raiders responded in the fourth inning when Bomgaars was hit by a pitch and scored on a triple by Gross, who then scored on a throwing error. This extended Northwestern's lead to 5-1.

In the final inning, the Raiders sealed the win with three more runs. Cassidy Gors singled, and pinch runner Berkley Johannsen scored on a double by Sydney Jacobs. Jacobs and Myla Murphy both scored on an error, concluding the game with an 8-1 victory.

Game Notes
  • Ava Gross has emerged at a the plate, this time with three hits and two RBIs.
  • Her hits included two doubles and a triple.
  • Allison Koontz can pitch and hit, delivering five innings with just one run and hit two singles.
  • Faith Kacmarynski highlighted the Raiders' SEVEN stolen bases with two of her own.
  • Seven Northwestern batters registered at least one hit.
Game 2: NWC 1 - Mayville State 4
Win: L. Mathiowet (1-0)
Loss: Audrie Kohl (1-2)

How It Happened:
Mayville State would strike the first blow in the third inning with an RBI double. A few plays later, and a three-RBI double put the Comets ahead 4-0.

The Raiders responded in the fifth inning with an Ava Gross single up the middle. Allison Koontz doubled to center field, advancing Gross to third, before Faith Kacmarynski grounded out to shortstop, allowing Gross to score. Northwestern still trailed 4-1.

Despite opportunities in the sixth and seventh innings, the Raiders were unable to close the gap. Northwestern would have runners on in each of those innings but left them stranded. 

Game Notes: Up Next: Northwestern returns to the ASB Dome on Friday, February 27th at 12 PM in a rematch against Dickinson State before facing Haskell at 2 PM.
