Red Raiders Secure 52-0 Victory Over Chargers

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – No. 20 Northwestern was dominant on both sides of the ball as the Raiders posted a 52-0 shutout of Briar Cliff on Saturday.

"Our team executed really well today. I felt like we played our most complete game," head coach Matt McCarty said. "Anytime you can put up a shutout it means all three phases played at a high level."

The Raiders scored on each of their two first-quarter possessions, finishing both drives with one-yard scoring plays by Colby Duncan and taking a 14-0 lead. After the defense limited BCU's opening drive to a punt, Tate Connell's 15-yard return gave the Red Raiders the ball at their 30, and Duncan moved the offense with a 35-yard completion to Austyn Gerard and an 18-yard run before scoring at 6:03. The Raiders' defense forced another punt on BCU's next series, with Isaac Wenthe breaking up a third-down pass, and Connell's 41-yard return set up the offense at the Chargers 24. Solomon Tea's 11-yard run helped move the ball inside the 10, and Duncan scored again on fourth down with 1:44 left before Gianna Bennett's second extra point. BCU reached its own 37 on the final possession of the quarter, but the Red Raiders finished the first quarter ahead 14-0.

Northwestern added two touchdowns and kept BCU off the board in the second quarter, carrying a 28-0 lead into halftime. After the defense forced an early punt, Duncan led an 86-yard scoring drive and hit Caleb Moore for a 60-yard touchdown at 12:01, with Bennett adding the extra point. The Chargers crossed midfield on their next possession, but the Red Raiders stopped the drive after Barret Bleeker hurried an incomplete third-down pass and a false start pushed the home team into 4th and long. The Raiders then went 94 yards in 13 plays, converting 4th-and-1 at the four before Duncan finished the march with a one-yard rush at 1:55. The defense forced another late punt with tackles for loss by Brock Fisher and Bleeker, and Duncan's 35-yard completion to Gerard gave the Red Raiders one more push before the half ended.

The Red Raiders scored touchdowns on all three third-quarter possessions and added a takeaway while holding BCU scoreless in the quarter. The half began with Tate Connell's 32-yard kickoff return and a Chargers personal foul giving the Raiders the ball at the BCU 49, and Duncan converted third-down completions to Gerard and Moore before Solomon Tea's five-yard touchdown run at 12:09 made the score 35-0. BCU moved into the red zone on the ensuing possession, but Northwestern got off the field on 4th-and-5 after Jordan Carter stopped a completion for a one-yard loss on third down. Duncan then led a four-play, 80-yard drive with completions of 22 yards to Ahman Langton, 46 to Tea and 10 to Lane Maassen, setting up Gerard's two-yard touchdown run at 4:43. Connell intercepted BCU on the next drive and returned it to the Chargers 36, and Luke Anderson later completed a five-yard touchdown pass to Evan McCann with 1:10 left, giving the Raiders a 49-0 lead after three.

The Red Raiders' defense controlled the fourth quarter and helped finish off a 52-0 win, opening the frame with a stop that included Dylan Schillinger's pass breakup and Joel Meier's 10-yard sack. Bleeker later forced and recovered a fourth-down fumble at the Raiders 47, and although the ensuing short-field possession ended with a turnover, the defense answered with another stand. The Raiders put together their scoring drive from their own 27 with 6:19 left, as Anderson moved the chains with a six-yard completion and then hit Langton for 41 yards to the 10-yard line. Hunter Walters carried twice inside the 10 before Bennett made a 14-yard field goal with 1:53 remaining to put the score at its final of 52-0.
