Edwards’ First-Half Hat Trick Guides Raiders to Victory

LEE'S SUMMIT, Mo. – Northwestern defeated Avila (Mo.) with a decisive 3-1 victory at Paragon Star Soccer Complex, highlighted by three first-half goals from Aliza Edwards.

Northwestern took an early lead with Edwards' first goal of the game in the 7th minute, assisted by Lucy Staines. The Eagles had multiple attempts to respond, including two shots by Cali Lasater that were saved by Northwestern keeper Bailey Bynum. The visitors extended their lead when Edwards scored her second goal in the 13th minute, assisted by Marissa Talamantes, and added a third, unassisted goal at the 22nd minute to make it 3-0. Despite the Eagles' attempts, including a header by Lauren Shrout that hit the post, the Red Raiders maintained control throughout the first half.

The second half began with the Raiders' lineup taking the field, but it was the Eagles who dominated the early minutes with a flurry of offensive activity. Isabel Javier scored in the 60th minute, narrowing the score to 3-1 after several corner kicks set up the opportunity. Bynum, Northwestern's goalkeeper, was tested repeatedly, making key saves against shots from Danielle Desmarteau and Alessandra Calderon. Despite late efforts from the Raiders' Lydia Timm and Grace Najera, both of whom had their shots saved by the Eagles' goalkeeper Shae Sweeney, the half ended with Avila maintaining pressure through multiple corner kicks, but unable to further close the gap.
