Newcomers Shine as Legends are Honored at Home Opener

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The lights were on and the stars were out as Northwestern took down Waldorf 40-0 in front of an energetic crowd at De Valois Stadium.

"We talked about needing to execute at a high level, and I thought we were able to do that with the amount of new faces that we saw on the field," head coach Matt McCarty said. "whether it was a young guy, a redshirt freshman or a true freshman, we had a lot of guys stepping into some big roles for us. They executed at a high level, and that was really fun to see.

The Raiders opened the first quarter with a strong offensive drive, highlighted by a 46-yard pass from Beau Bush to Carson Ness, setting up Solomon Tea's four-yard scamper for the Raiders' first points of the season. After a Jovany Kabongo kickoff landed at the 1-yard line, Levi Egli forced the safety with a sack in the end zone after pressure was brought by Ben Egli, making it 9-0.
The Raiders kept their strong offensive momentum into the second, as Bush connected with Tea for a 15-yard gain, followed by a successful 13-yard completion to Tanner Schouten. Tea continued to be a key player, scoring a touchdown with a five-yard rush at 10:37 after a series of efficient runs. With less than a minute left in the half, Bush found Schouten again on a deep ball, pushing the score to 23-0 on a 36-yard connection.

"I thought our offensive line protected well, and I thought Beau had great composure in the pocket and really delivered some nice footballs," McCarty added. "Solomon in the backfield has great patience when he runs the football and was able to chew up some yards. I'm excited about the way that our offensive group played as a whole."

Halftime saw Northwestern honor a legend as Coach Larry "Bubb" Korver was recognized by the National Football Foundation and the College Football Hall of Fame, being honored in front of the home crowd for a career of excellence with the Raiders.

"Coach Korver means so much to this program and to Northwestern. I think the way that I coach and the culture we have in our program is because of him. We try to do things in a way that honors him and his legacy. I'm thankful for what he's done for Northwestern football," McCarty noted after the game.

Northwestern continued to maintain momentum into the third quarter as Gardner Casey's impressive drive concluded with a five-yard rush for a touchdown with three minutes remaining, pushing the lead to 30-0.

The final quarter began with Tea's five-yard rush setting up Kabongo's successful 22-yard field goal, increasing the lead to 33-0. The Raiders' defense added to an impressive performance with Jaxson Hildebrand taking down the quarterback for a 10-yard loss, halting Waldorf's drive. Eli Carpenter and Colby Duncan powered through with impactful rushes in the final drive, culminating in Duncan's six-yard touchdown run at 5:46, to put the finishing touches on a shutout win.
