Northwestern Completes Improbable Comeback, Takes Two at Dordt

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – Northwestern rallied from an 8-1 deficit in game one to win in extras before picking up a dominant win in the second, sweeping Dordt for the first time since 2022.

GAME 1: NWC 12, DORDT 11 (8 inn.)

How It Happened
Dordt belted four home runs in the first two frames to take an 8-1 lead, but the Raiders used a seven-run sixth to force extras and take the win.

The Raiders opened the first inning with a run after Chloe Gallegos singled to left field, driving in Sydney Jacobs, who had reached base on a leadoff walk. The Defenders responded quickly with a powerful offensive display in the bottom half, scoring four runs on two home runs.

Dordt continued their momentum in the second inning, adding four more runs to their tally. Kreuz hit another home run, bringing in two runs, followed by a solo home run from Steenstra, extending their lead to 8–1.

The Red Raiders managed to reduce the deficit in the fourth inning. Ravyn Krachey, pinch-hitting, delivered a two-RBI single, scoring Tatum Schmalbeck and Maddie Kvatek to bring the score to 8–3.

In the fifth inning, the Raiders added another run with Gallegos' single to center field, scoring Jacobs. The Defenders countered with three runs in their half, pushing the score to 11–4 by the end of the inning.

The sixth inning marked a turning point for Northwestern. They scored seven runs, leveraging a series of singles and capitalizing on defensive errors by Dordt. Jacobs' single brought in two runs, and Schmalbeck's base hit tied the game at 11-11 to end the inning.

Northwestern took the lead in the eighth inning after Gwen Mikkelsen doubled and scored on a double by Gallegos. This run secured a 12–11 advantage, which the Raiders maintained as they held Dordt scoreless in the bottom of the inning, securing the victory.

GAME NOTES:
  • Chloe Gallegos went 3-for-5 with four RBIs, hitting the game-winning RBI double in the eighth.
  • Tatum Schmalbeck impressed on both sides of the ball, driving in the tying run and throwing 2.2 one-hit innings to earn the win in the circle.
  • Sydney Jacobs went 2-for-4 with three runs scored, two RBIs, and a walk.
  • Maddie Kvatek stole twice and drove in a run.

How It Happened
No. 7 Northwestern overpowered Dordt with a decisive 12-1 victory, highlighted by a seven-run second inning at Open Space Park on Wednesday night.

The Red Raiders started strong in the first inning, with Sydney Jacobs scoring on a wild pitch followed by Gwen Mikkelsen crossing home plate on another wild pitch. Maddie Kvatek then scored on an RBI double by Ravyn Krachey, and Aly Vortherms, running for Krachey, scored on a double by Jori Hajek, giving the Raiders a 4-1 lead after the first.

In the second inning, the Raiders expanded their lead significantly with a seven-run onslaught. Charli Bomgaars and Jacobs scored on a throwing error, and Tatum Schmalbeck hit a two-run home run, bringing in Jenny Luevano. Kvatek scored on a single by Hajek, followed by another run from Hajek on a wild pitch. C. Gors also scored on a wild pitch, and Bomgaars drove in Gors with a single to end the inning with a 10-1 lead.

The third inning saw Mikkelsen hit a solo homer, her seventh of the year, to extend the lead to 11-1. The Raiders maintained their defensive strength in the bottom of the inning, with three consecutive strikeouts, keeping the Defenders scoreless.

In the fifth inning, the Raiders preserved their lead, preventing the Defenders from scoring and securing a 12-1 victory. The game concluded with the Raiders achieving a decisive win, highlighted by strong offense and effective pitching.

GAME NOTES:
  • Gwen Mikkelsen hit her seventh home run of the season, matching her career-high.
  • Mikkelsen now sits second in program history in career hits (241) and is tied for third in career RBIs (168).
  • Tatum Schmalbeck homered for the third time in five games.
  • Kate Kralik struck out six in three innings, earning her GPAC-leading 17th win.
  • Kralik is now seven strikeouts away from 500 for her career.
  • Jori Hajek went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a double.
  • Sydney Jacobs extended her hitting streak to eight games.
  • Ravyn Krachey went 1-for-2 with an RBI double.
  • Maddie Kvatek doubled, walked, and stole a base.
