Raiders Survive for Overtime Win in Fremont

FREMONT, Neb. – Colby Duncan connected with Carson Ness to give Northwestern the lead in overtime, as the Raiders escaped Saturday's road contest with a 23-17 win.

Northwestern began strong with an effective opening drive, as Colby Duncan connected with Carson Ness for an 18-yard gain, setting the tone early. The drive stalled at the Warriors' 48-yard line, resulting in a punt. The Red Raiders' defense quickly regained control, forcing a Midland punt after a short series, highlighted by a quarterback hurry from Jacob Dragstra.

On the ensuing possession, the Raiders capitalized with a methodical 59-yard drive, concluding with Duncan's 34-yard touchdown pass to Tanner Schouten. As the period closed, the Raiders led 7-0, with the defense stifling Midland's advances, punctuated by a sack by Trystin Voss.

The second quarter began with momentum shifting to the Warriors following a Raider fumble that resulted in a quick scoring drive for Midland, tying the game at 7-7.

The Red Raiders' defense then held strong, with Dragstra and Owen Lalumendre executing key tackles, preventing another Midland score after a turnover on downs. The Raiders gained a defensive boost when Jordan Carter intercepted a pass at the Midland 40-yard line, but Northwestern's ensuing drive was hampered by penalties and ended in a punt.

In the closing moments of the half, the Raiders managed to drive downfield, aided by a 33-yard reception by Cohen Jacobs, which set up a successful 23-yard field goal by Gianna Bennett. This gave Northwestern the lead, bringing the score to 10-7 as the half concluded.

Midland seized momentum early in the third quarter with a sustained drive, culminating in an 11-yard touchdown run by Johnson. This score, followed by a successful extra point, extended the Warriors' lead to 14-10. The Raiders responded on their ensuing possession, with Duncan leading a methodical advance down the field. Key plays included a 16-yard rush by Solomon Tea and a 14-yard pass to Ness. As the quarter closed, Northwestern was in the red zone, trailing 14-10, and poised to regain the lead.

The fourth quarter commenced with Northwestern driving down the field, as Duncan found Remmerde for a seven-yard touchdown pass that turned from an incompletion to a score after review. The defense held strong, forcing the Warriors to punt after a series of short gains and incomplete passes. Northwestern then executed a strategic drive, highlighted by a significant 19-yard rush by Schouten, maintaining control as the quarter progressed.

As the clock wound down, the Raiders' defense intensified, with sacks by Lalumendre and Dylan Schillinger pushing Midland back and disrupting their offensive rhythm. Midland managed to get down the field, and as time expired, connected on a 48-yard field goal to send the game to overtime.

After both teams failed to score on the first overtime possession, Duncan found Ness in the end zone from six yards out to give the Raiders an advantage. Despite the OT-required two-point conversion failing, the Northwestern defense had an opportunity to close the game with a stop on 4th and 1. Midland then attempted a jump pass that fell to the turf, solidifying Northwestern's 23-17 win.
