Northwestern Clinches GPAC Share with Close Match Over Midland

FREMONT, Neb. – Northwestern defeated Midland in an aggressive battle 2-1, securing at least a share of the GPAC regular season title.

"The will to win can be an incredible thing. This team bends but doesn't break," head coach Dan Swier commented. "They stay unified in all situations, and they did exactly what they needed to in a very difficult environment tonight. The entire coaching staff is extremely proud of each and every player on this team."

The Warrior offense started out the match on the attack with two shots in the first two minutes. Both defenses held strong, not allowing any additional shots until the 21st minute when a Gonzalo Domingo shot was saved by Midland's keeper, Thomas Reyes. Northwestern goalkeeper Edoardo Allessandrini would get his first save just a minute later. The Raiders opened up the scoring in the 28th minute following a Juan Miranda corner kick. The initial attempt was deflected by the Warrior defense, but Miranda sent it back in and, after bouncing off of players from both teams, Diego Quintero connected and found the back of the net for his first goal of the season giving the Raiders a 1-0 lead. Daniel Lindahl had a shot blocked by Reyes right before the break and Northwestern went into halftime up 1-0.

Midland wasted no time in the second half, tying the game in the 45th minute with a Thomas Gibson header, capitalizing on a corner kick opportunity. They stayed on the attack and in the 52nd minute Allessandrini had an amazing sequence with back-to-back saves keeping the game tied up. The Red Raiders reclaimed their lead in the 71st minute when Daniel Lindahl got behind the defense, beat the keeper and scored, giving the Raiders the lead. Despite an aggressive final push where all 11 members of the Warrior team were up on offense, they were unable to score and Northwestern won the match 2-1, remaining atop the GPAC with one regular season outing remaining.
