First-Half Advantage Not Enough for Raiders on Opening Day

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – There were plenty of positive moments for Northwestern to build on in Saturday's season opener, but four second-half goals helped Graceland (Iowa) dash the Raiders' hopes to start 1-0.

The visitors struck first, as Caitlin Lageman found the back of the net first to give the Yellowjackets a 1-0 advantage.

Northwestern had a clear advantage for the rest of the half, first knotting the score on Kylie Baccam's laser from the top of the box that cleared the keeper's head. The Raiders took their first lead of the day past the half's midway point, as Taylor Brennan received a pass from Avril Baccam, sliding in ahead of the defender to cross the ball into the goal.

Just before the break, Avril Baccam scored her first goal in Raider Red, firing with her left foot into the back corner, giving Northwestern a 3-1 halftime lead.

Graceland stormed back in the second, using two goals from Skye Hernandez to tie the match at 3-3 with just under 30 minutes to play. Caitlin Lageman broke the tie with her second goal at 81' before the Yellowjackets added an insurance goal minutes later.
