Northwestern’s Season Ends in GPAC Tournament

CRETE, Neb. – Holding close in both games today, Northwestern's baseball team was eliminated from the GPAC tournament following losses to No. 13 Doane and Jamestown.

GAME 1: DOANE 5, NWC 4
Pitching Decisions
Win: K. Voggesser (4-1)
Loss: Dylan Kirkeby (2-7)
Save: I. Miller (3)

How It Happened
An early-morning matchup with pod host and No. 13-ranked Doane saw the Raiders' comeback bid fall short, heading to the elimination bracket with a 5-4 loss.

After scoring a run in the second, the Tigers created distance with a three-run RBI double in the third to move ahead 4-0. They scored again in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead and force the Raiders to work back in the late innings.

Northwestern loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth, plating one run on a fielder's choice to second, making it 5-1.

The Raiders put up two more in the sixth, as Brody Ayers came off the pine to hit an RBI single, scoring both Mo Watson and Mason Porepp, who both were awarded free bases on a walk and hit-by-pitch earlier in the inning.

Following the stretch, Northwestern inched closer, cutting the lead to one run with an RBI groundout by Devin Dirkx, driving in Luke Wroblewski from third.

Northwestern put its leadoff runners on in each of the eighth and ninth innings but fell to the pod's top seed.

Game Notes:
  • Sam Stanford doubled, collecting two hits.
  • Brody Ayers drove in two runs on a pinch-hit single.
  • Ayers also stole a base.
  • Mo Watson had a hit, a walk, and scored a run.
  • Peyton Montecinos was effective as a middle reliever, throwing 4.1 innings with three strikeouts and two hits allowed.
  • Jakeb Swallow pitched two innings, striking out four batters.

How It Happened
Ranier Castillo drove in a run and Northwestern put two runners on in the ninth, but Jamestown came away with the win in Friday's elimination game.

The Jimmies put up two hits on two hits and an error in the fourth, using a double followed by an RBI base hit to take the game's first lead. In the next inning, they added an insurance run on a two-out single with a runner on to grab a 3-0 advantage.

Moving ahead to the bottom of the sixth, Castillo had a two-out single that scored Devin Dirkx from third, though the Raiders left the bases loaded.

Northwestern placed runners on first and second in the ninth, but their rally attempt was cut short as Jamestown advanced to the pod final.
