Softball Opens Weekend with GPAC Sweep

CRETE, Neb. – Northwestern used efficient pitching performances to take down Doane in both games of Friday's doubleheader.

"Our defense really stood out today," senior outfielder Charli Bomgaars commented. "We had some next level plays that most teams wouldn't plan on making."

GAME 1: NWC 6, DOANE 1

Win: Kate Kralik (12-1)
Loss: A. Arroyo (0-6)

How It Happened
Northwestern scored the game's first three runs in Friday's game one win over the Doane Tigers.

Hitting the road for the first of four games this weekend, the Raiders put two runs across in the third to grab an early advantage. Tatum Schmalbeck singled following an error, making the score 2-0.

After Maddie Kvatek tripled and came in to score, Doane broke onto the board for the first time with a home run, making it 3-1 Raiders. Northwestern doused the threat in the next inning, though, with Jori Hajek getting an RBI base hit to bring Northwestern's lead back to three.

In the sixth, Kameryn Etherington put the finishing touches on the win, singling up the middle to send Charli Bomgaars and Ashtyn Billings home.

Game Notes:
  • Kameryn Etherington went 2-for-4 at the dish, driving in two runs and adding a double.
  • In the circle, Etherington punched out two hitters in 2.0 innings.
  • Kate Kralik earned her 12th pitching win of the year, going 5.0 innings with 4 Ks.
  • Maddie Kvatek hit a triple.
  • Ashtyn Billings stole a base to remain a perfect 17-for-17 on steal attempts.
  • Charli Bomgaars collected a walk and a stolen base.
GAME 2: NWC 8, DOANE 1
Pitching Decisions
Win: Ellie Jacobson (8-0)
Loss: F. Molina (6-7)
Save: None

How It Happened
The Raiders' winning streak moved to 17 games, bettering last year's mark of 16 in a row, as Northwestern completed the sweep of Doane.

Kameryn Etherington had a game to remember, knocking in a run in the first and then following it up with a two-run blast in the third to put her team up 3-1.

It was then a methodical offensive approach complemented by solid pitching from Ellie Jacobson that secured the sweep. A sac fly and an RBI walk scored Northwestern's next two runs before Randi Childress drove in three runs on an RBI double in the fifth.

Game Notes:
Up Next: Northwestern remains in Nebraska to face the Hastings Broncos tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
