Raiders Win Two on Saturday in Joplin

Tornow punches out 10, Porepp with four hits on the day

JOPLIN, Mo. – Northwestern earned its second and third wins of the weekend on Saturday, taking an extra-innings decision over William Woods (Mo.) and using a six-run second inning to run past William Penn (Iowa).

GAME 1: NWC 5, WWU 4 (8 inn.)
Pitching Decisions
Win: Jakeb Swallow (1-0)
Loss: K. Haley (0-1)
Save: None

How It Happened
An extra inning was needed to decide a winner in game one of Saturday's slate, as Northwestern came away with a 5-4 win in eight frames.

William Woods scored two right away in the first, setting themselves up well through the middle innings before they added another run in the fifth to make the score 3-0.

The Raiders began their comeback effort in the bottom of the fifth, with Drew Dykstra plating two on a single with two runners in scoring position.

Needing one more run to knot the score back up, Mason Porepp got aboard with two outs and came around to score from first on an RBI double from Colby Shelton.

The score held at 3-3 going into extras of the scheduled seven-inning game, and the Owls attacked first with a two-out RBI single that brought home the international baserunner on second.

Northwestern tied it up in the bottom frame, playing small ball as Dykstra advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and then scored the next play on an error. Then, with two on and two out, TJ Silliman was the walk-off hero, using a base hit to bring the winning run in from third.

Game Notes:

How It Happened
Northwestern put up six runs in the second inning on its way to a commanding win in game two of the day, defeating the William Penn Statesmen.

After one player got aboard for each team in the first, Northwestern used four hits to drive in six runs in the second. Mason Porepp hit a leadoff triple to get the action started, and TJ Silliman recorded his second RBI of the day two appearances later. The Raiders received some assistance with the bases loaded as well, scoring three times on a walk or hit-by-pitch to bring their lead to 4-0. Batting around, Porepp doubled to tack on two more and take a 6-0 lead.

Northwestern's largest lead was eight runs as Colby Shelton notched an RBI groundout, followed with yet another hit for Mason Porepp, and RBI single that scored Sam Stanford from third.

Although the Statesmen added three runs in the sixth, Colton Korver finished the job, getting five outs to help the Raiders post their fourth win of the year.

Game Notes:
  • Drew Dykstra earned his first win of the season on the mound, punching out five in 5.1 innings.
  • Mason Porepp had three hits, sitting just a home run away from the cycle.
  • Porepp drove in three runs on the day.
  • Colby Shelton went 1-for-4 with two RBIs.
  • In his second career game, Ranier Castillo went 2-for-4.
Up Next: The Raiders will head back to Missouri, playing in the Kansas City metro next weekend for a four-game slate with Grand View (Iowa).
