Northwestern Falls in Battle of Top-10 NAIA Programs

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – A late defensive stand by Morningside ended Northwestern's chances at a road win as the Raiders fell 13-7 in Sioux City.

In what was a defensive stalemate of a first quarter, Morningside played the field position game, forcing three-straight three-and-outs before converting on a 38-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead with 1:31 left in the first.

A deep ball for 37 yards put the Raiders down by two scores early in the second, as Morningside moved ahead 10-0 with 14:03 to go in the half.

On the ensuing defensive drive, Gavin Lorenzen helped Northwestern get solid field position with an interception at the Mustang 35, his first of the season and third for his career. The field goal unit then trotted out with a chance to get on the board, but Stader's 52-yard attempt was wide left. The Raiders stopped another drive via the interception when Clayton Bosma picked off his second pass of the year near the goal line, helping the Raiders run out the half.

Northwestern started the second half creating multiple turnovers, first forcing a fumble on the opening kickoff to get near the red zone. On the first Mustang drive of the half, Korver Demma then recorded a strip sack, with Trystin Voss recovering the fumble to spark another Red Raider drive. The Raiders took advantage, once again driving into plus territory before Hayden Gross found Peyton Carroll on a fade to put his team on the board.

Morningside later converted on a 44-yard field goal to make it 13-7 going into the final quarter.

The Raiders made one final push with under two minutes to go, but a Morningside defensive stand helped the Mustangs emerge with a 13-7 victory.
