Men's Soccer Drops GPAC Opener

Stan van den Beld with his sixth goal of the season

ORANGE CITY, Iowa  – Saturday was the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) opener for the Northwestern men's soccer team (4-3-0, 0-1-0 GPAC), as they fell in the first game of their homestand, 4-1 to Briar Cliff (5-2-0, 2-0-0 GPAC).

Northwestern controlled the ball well throughout the first half, but a few opportunistic goals for Briar Cliff put the visitors in charge in the opening 45 minutes. The Chargers opened the scoring with a ball ahead of the Raider defense, as Andrew Buchanan put Briar Cliff ahead 1-0. Briar Cliff doubled their lead at the 12-minute mark, and once again it was Buchanan who put his team up 2-0.

The Raiders' best look off the foot of Stan van den Beld (Jr., Voorhout, Netherlands) came late in the half, though Charger goalkeeper Hjalmar Nilsson made a diving save. Minutes later, a corner kick led to the third Briar Cliff goal before the halftime break.

Both teams broke even in the second half, as Briar Cliff extended their lead in the 54th minute before van den Beld sent in his sixth goal of the season to make the score 4-1.
