Northwestern's GPAC Tournament Run Ends as Runners-Up

Northwestern surpasses program's single-season strikeout record

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – Midland (36-12, 16-6 GPAC) captured the 2023 Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) tournament championship on Saturday, winning a 2-0 series over Northwestern (46-8, 18-4 GPAC) and putting an end to the Raiders' three-game winning streak.

Win: Aliyah Rincon (20-5)
Loss: Kameryn Etherington (20-6)

How It Happened
A four-run fourth inning was the catalyst for Midland in the Game 1 win on Saturday afternoon.

It was a pitcher's duel for the first three innings, while only one hit was recorded between the two teams in that span. Chloe Gallegos (So., Carroll, Iowa) collected the first hit of the game, a leadoff single in the second. The Raiders loaded the bases, drawing a pair of walks with two outs before the third out was recorded on a strikeout to end the inning.

The Warriors struck in the top of the fourth, scoring four runs on three hits to create some space for themselves heading into the latter half of the contest.

Northwestern put a run on the board in the home half of the fourth, as Maddie Kvatek (Jr., Stevens Point, Wis.) hit a one-out single into center and later scored when Gwen Mikkelsen (Jr., Casa Grande, Ariz.) hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded, making the score 4-1.

Hits were scattered until the final frame when Midland put two insurance runs up on an RBI double by Carly Pfitzer and an RBI single for Amanda Schmaderer, two of the Warriors' top hitters on the day.

The Raiders put one runner on with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but the final out was recorded and Midland took a 1-0 series lead.

How It Happened
Northwestern put together a valiant effort in Game 2 of Saturday's GPAC championship series, but it was Midland who walked away with the tournament title.

The Raiders fell behind early, with Midland taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning on consecutive RBIs from Amanda Schmaderer and Keira Painter.

In the bottom of the second, Northwestern cut the deficit in half as Emily Strasser (Sr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) led off the inning with a single and Chloe Gallegos brought her home from second with a base hit of her own.

Midland added another run in the following inning, using a bases-loaded single to increase their advantage to 3-1.

Northwestern later found success in the bottom of the third, tying the game at 3-3 with a pair of runs. Charli Bomgaars (So., Boyden, Iowa) sparked the offense, leading off the inning with a walk. After Madysn Grotewold (Jr., Larchwood, Iowa) pushed a bunt single between the pitching circle and first base, the two speedsters stole second and third, setting up a 2-RBI double by Strasser.

Alexis Page, the pitcher for Midland, helped herself out in the fourth with a leadoff home run deep to left, making the score 4-3. Later in the inning, Amanda Schmaderer recorded her third RBI with a bases-loaded walk.

The Raiders got a run back on a two-out single by Jennifer Boeve (Sr., Hastings, Neb.), but Midland forced a flyout in the next at-bat to secure the conference title.
