Jahn Wins 200m and Breaks Record, Kalvelage Breaks Long Jump Record

VERMILLION, S.D. – The heat kept the Raiders rolling through their events this weekend at the two day meet hosted by NCAA University of South Dakota. With over 2,000 athletes in attendance, the distance races and a few throws and jumps on Friday helped lead the way through for the sprints and jumping events on Saturday. It would culminate in Braden Jahn winning the 200m dash in a time of 21.23, breaking the NWC outdoor school record. Braden Kalvelage would get second in the long jump with a wind legal mark of 7.59m to get second in the competition, and also break the outdoor long jump school record.

Starting off for the Raiders on Friday was Will Minnick. Fouling on his first throw of the competition he would battle back and throw his best on his 3rd throw, up to 46.45m ro 152' 5.75", just off a lifetime best. Not to be outdone, later on the day, Bryan Zylstra would huck the shot put 15.13m or 49' 7.75" on his second throw, falling backwards as he did it. He would shoot up in the rankings from it, but just fall short of making the final round.

The start of the running events was the 800m run which held Trey Engelmann and Jacob Kalkwarf among the NCAA competition. Engelmann would battle to a solid 2:00.58 finish, and Kalkwarf would run the EXACT same time as he did the week prior at 2:11.79 to tie his PR in the event. Following, the 400H pitted Gunner Vargas and Reese Van Zee next to each other, as iron sharpens iron. Vargas would go on to run a PR race by over a second, finishing in 1:00.31, and Van Zee would drop over 2 seconds over the race distance to finish in 1:00.84, just barely behind his teammate. To further not be outdone, the distance runner took the challenge of continuing the PRs. Ben VanDeBerg would run a second faster than his last run two weeks ago, finishing in 16:13.16. Braden Dirks would be pulled along and would run nearly 5 seconds faster than two weeks ago and finish in 17:33.00. Senior Daniel Nordquist would fight the ever growing winds and run a PR 1500 in the next race, finish in 4:22.82, 7 seconds faster than his previous best. Tommy Tracy and David Bernhagen would both make their 1500m debut as well.

On to Saturday, where the deceptively chilly morning would lead to many sunburns over the ever warming day, Josh Henkenius and Heydon Strope would both compete in Javelin. Henkenius, while not hitting a PR throw, would have his best series of throws, and would have the added challenge of adjusting to the gusts of wind throwing off his runway. Second field event would be the high jump for the Raiders. Harland Groves would lead the Raiders with a season best tying mark of 1.85m or 6'1". Drew Geetings, back from an adductor injury from his sampling of the heptathlon, would follow just behind Groves, clearing 1.80m. Both gentlemen having plenty of jumping power left, but unable to adjust to the blustering tailwinds. At the same time as the high jump, Braden Kalvelage would be getting ready for his flight of long jump. Fouling his first attempt, he would shake off the sand and clear his head as he walked back to the runway start for his next jump. On that jump he would leap to a Personal Record, and NWC School record of 7.59m of 24' 11". This jump also had 1.6 meters per second tail wind, making it a legal mark for the NAIA National Championship. As of the writing of this, that jump would put Kalvelage in the number 1 spot of the NAIA long jump.

On the track, with the wind at his back, AJ Bomgaars would run a PR in the 110 Hurdles at 16.44. Shortly after, Vargas would be back again to PR in the 400m open with a time of 56.03, a full second below his previous. The 100m would be the biggest benefit of the "hurricane force winds" as some of the athletes called it. Braden Jahn would run a 10.66 in the event, technically a PR, although the wind would not be legal for national qualification purposes. Followed closely behind was senior Cody Post in 10.82 with his being a wind-legal speed of 3.4 m/s. The 200m would start relatively soon after the 100s were done, and would debatably see the most action. Jahn would go on to run a PR in the event as well, crushing his all conditions lifetime best, and breaking the NWC School Record in the 200m, finishing in 21.23. This mark as well would be above the legal limit of 4.0 meters per second wind speed. Post would follow suit with a legal 21.81 coming off of some small tweaks here and there. Grant Palmer would also run an all-conditions lifetime PR in the 200m at 22.20, as would Reece Wynne at 22.53 and Preston Pfaffle at 23.19.
