Rally Attempt Falls Short in Game Two on Senior Day

Etherington with a grand slam, Boeve homers

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The regular season came to an end on Saturday, as the No. 12 Northwestern Red Raiders (43-6, 18-4 GPAC) dropped a pair of games on Senior Day to (RV) Midland (31-12, 16-6 GPAC).

The ball was flying out of the park, as seven home runs were hit between both teams on the day.

GAME 1: MID 7, NWC 2

Pitching Decisions
Win: Aliyah Rincon (17-5)
Loss: Kate Kralik (17-1)

How It Happened
Midland's Roni Foote hit a pair of home runs as the Warriors powered their way to a win in game one of Saturday's doubleheader.

Foote opened the scoring with a solo shot in the first inning before Jennifer Boeve (Sr., Hastings, Neb.) celebrated Senior Day with a home run of her own to tie the game in the second. The deep ball was Boeve's first of the season and the sixth of her career.

The visitors then started to separate themselves from the Raiders, scoring in each of the next five innings, including two runs off of home runs.

Trailing 7-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Gwen Mikkelsen (Jr., Casa Grande, Ariz.) extended her hitting streak to 11 games, driving in Ashtyn Billings (Fr., Ankeny, Iowa) with two outs. However, that would be all the Raiders could scratch across in the inning, as Midland won their 30th game of the season.

Game Notes
  • Emily Strasser and Jennifer Boeve each had multi-hit games.
  • Boeve hit her first home run of the season.
  • Gwen Mikkelsen drove in a run in a 1-4 outing.
  • Ashtyn Billings recorded a hit and scored a run.
  • Billings advanced her hitting streak to 12 games, while Mikkelsen's streak moved to 11 games.

GAME 2: MID 8, NWC 7

Pitching Decisions
Win: Alexis Page (4-1)
Loss: Kameryn Etherington (18-5)
Save: None

How It Happened
A Kameryn Etherington (Jr., Algona, Iowa) grand slam put the Raiders back within shouting distance, but Midland's offensive performance lifted the visiting Warriors to a doubleheader sweep.

Northwestern got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead in the first after a leadoff walk for Gwen Mikkelsen turned into a score on a wild pitch.

Midland went on to tie the game in the top of the second, as Aliyah Rincon scored during a run down between first and second.

In the bottom half of the inning, Etherington walked and came around to score to give the Raiders the lead back.

It was the top of the third when Midland gave themselves a significant advantage, with Roni Foote hitting an RBI single with two runners in scoring position. In the next at-bat, the Warriors loaded the bases and Amanda Schmaderer hit a grand slam to make the score 6-2.

The Raiders cut into the deficit again in the bottom of the third when Addison Binde (Fr., Scotland, S.D.) scored on a wild pitch after previously drawing a leadoff walk.

The longball was the story of the fifth inning, with Midland adding a two-run shot and Etherington hit a grand slam that just made it over the fence, making the score 8-7 going into the late innings.

Northwestern ended the game with a runner in scoring position as a valiant rally attempt fell short.

Game Notes
  • Kameryn Etherington hit a grand slam, driving in four runs on a 1-3 day at the plate.
  • Etherington also struck out five batters in the circle.
  • Madysn Grotewold reached twice on two bunt singles.
  • The Raiders drew seven walks as a team.
  • Northwestern lost their first game of the year when scoring in the first inning.
  • Ashtyn Billings extended her hitting streak to 13 games.

Up Next: Northwestern will host a four-team GPAC tournament pod of No. 8-seeded Mount Marty, No. 4-seeded Dordt, and No. 5-seeded Briar Cliff beginning on Wednesday, May 3. The Raiders will first play against Mount Marty at 12:00 p.m.
