Raiders Win in Comeback Fashion Against Concordia, Down Aquinas in Final Inning

Bouman earns 100th win as Northwestern's head coach

ROSEMONT, Ill. The Northwestern College softball team (4-0, 0-0 GPAC) continued their weekend at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Leadoff Classic, picking up two more neutral-site wins over (RV) Aquinas (Mich.) (2-1, 0-0 WHAC) and Concordia (Mich.) (0-3, 0-0 WHAC).

Head coach Shane Bouman earned his 100th win at the helm of Northwestern's program

Win: Kate Kralik (1-0)
Loss: Kayla Fessenden (0-1)
Save: None

HOW IT HAPPENED
Aquinas got on the scoreboard early as Courtney Hardin hit a solo shot to left field to give the Saints a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning.

Hits came at a premium over the next couple of innings, as neither team recorded a hit until Aquinas used an RBI double to extend their lead to 2-0.

The Raiders did not wait to start their comeback bid, as the top of the 4th saw Northwestern put up two runs to tie the game. After Gwen Mikkelsen (Jr., Casa Grande, Ariz.) drew a one-out walk, Emily Strasser (Sr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) hit a ground-rule double to put runners on second and third. Kameryn Etherington (Jr., Algona, Iowa) followed by doubling herself, driving in Mikkelsen and Strasser.

The top of the 5th saw Ashtyn Billings (Fr., Ankeny, Iowa) enter the circle for the first time this season, holding off a leadoff double to keep the score knotted at 2-2.

The Raiders were down to one out with the score still tied in the top of the 7th, trying to stave off another extra innings game when Charli Bomgaars (So., Boyden, Iowa) reached on a bunt and proceeded to steal second. Jennifer Boeve (Sr., Hastings, Neb.) drove Bomgaars in with a single to center on what proved to be the game-winning run. Billings shut down the side in the bottom of the 7th to help the Raiders move to 3-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Raiders came back from a two-run deficit for the second time of the day, this time using a four-run 4th inning to defeat Concordia-Ann Arbor (Mich.).

Concordia entered the scoring column in the top of the 2nd on a two-out RBI single to make the score 1-0 before adding another run in the 4th to go up by two.

The Raiders used a rally in the bottom half of the 4th, stringing hits together with two outs in the inning. Following a leadoff single from Chloe Gallegos (So., Carroll, Iowa), Emily Strasser singled and advanced to second on an error, picking up the RBI and making the score 2-1.

Northwestern tied the game with aggressive baserunning when Strasser stole home and Maddie Kvatek (Jr., Stevens Point, Wis.) advanced to third. Ashtyn Billings helped the Raiders take the lead when she brought in Kvatek before Billings scored on a throwing error.

Etherington pitched a gem in the final three innings to close it out, not allowing a hit to secure Northwestern's fourth win of the weekend and of the season.

"What a great trip to start the season," Bouman commented. "Our pitching was solid, defense is improving, and we competed well offensively. Our young players showed a lot of versatility. I was proud to see this group find a way to win hard-fought games early against great competition."

Up Next: The Raiders will travel to Sioux Center next weekend to play against Peru State (Neb.) and Grand View on Friday, February 10. First pitches are set for 4:00 and 6:00 p.m. at the American State Bank Sports Complex.
