25 Raiders Meet Personal Records at Concordia Classic

SEWARD, Neb. – The canceled meet last week did nothing to slow down the Raiders, as they took a long trip down to Seward, Nebraska to face off against the south conference schools, and even some stiff National Collegiate Atheltics Association (NCAA) D-II competition. The men and women combined for 25 PRs over the course of the day, and six more season bests before the last event was finished.

The 60m dash saw Preston Pfaffle and Karson Gieseke, 17th and 34th respectively, both PR during the short, 7-second sprint race. Pfaffle, after running the exact same time 2 weeks in a row, dropped a full tenth of a second off of his 60m PR. Gieseke would end up dropping .01 off of his time. Gieseke, also running the 200, would drop over half a second in that race as well. Leading the Raiders over the 200m distance was sprints-captain Braden Jahn. Jahn would drop his 200m time down to 22.60 over the indoor distance and finish 4th overall, narrowly missing 1st by less than .2 seconds. Grant Palmer, in the same heat, pushed by Jahn, would run a seaon best indoor 200 of 23.15, barely missing the top 10. The final sprint race of the evening, the 400m Dash, would be led by Tanner Schouten in his first race of the season for the Raiders. He raced in 51.86 seconds over the two lap indoor race and is now ranked 16th within the Great Plains Athletic Confernece over that distance.

As the distances got progressively longer, the performaces stayed high as the distance runners fed off of the energy from the sprints team. The 600m run would have sophomore Trey Engelmann finish 2nd. One heat before that, freshman Aziah Ashley, as nervous as could be, would run his first his 600 ever, achieving a top-10 spot in his 9th place finish. The 800m run was when senior and distance captain Joseph Kunert would open up his indoor season. Coming off of his NAIA Cross Country National Championship qualification in November, Kunert would then run this 800 in a PR time of 2:02.53 and finish 7th overall.

Gunner Vargas and Jacob Kalkwarf would both go on to PR over the same distance. Daniel Nordquist, happy to run again, would just narrowly miss a PR in the 1000m run, but would finish the race in 10th place, for another Raider in the top-10!

The field events would see the same success as the track. Freshman Donovan Elmore, just barely missing a top-10 finish, would hit a PR in the high jump of 1.76m or 6'9.25". While also competing in the high jump, Harland Groves would leap his way to a PR in the Long Jump of 6.28m or 20' 7.25". Braden Kalvelage would, yet again, better his NAIA Automatic qualifying mark to a new PR of 7.28m or 23' 10.75". As of the writing of this, would move Kalvelage to a tie for 3rd place in the NAIA in the Long Jump. The final jump contested, the triple jump saw PRs as well. Liam Raymon would jump a PR of 12.61m, 41'4.5" and finish 9th, for another Raider Top-10 finish.

Over at the throws ring, William Minnick would lead the throwers yet again in the weight throw, coming off of his PR throw last competition. Heydon Strope would also heave the 35lb weight to a PR throw of 10.15m or 33'3.75" for another Raider PR. After the weight throw came the shot put, where Nathan Mather would PR in the throw for a 9.69m or 31'9.5" throw.
