Raiders Win Overtime Battle, Advance to Title Match

Second championship match appearance in three years

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – A thrilling overtime contest between Sioux County rivals saw Northwestern (14-4-2, 8-1-2 GPAC) advance to the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Championship for the second time in three years, defeating No. 6-seeded Dordt (9-7-4, 5-4-2 GPAC) by a score of 4-3.

"The guys displayed a high level of resilience during this match," said head coach Dan Swier. "It is so difficult to come from behind when your season is on the line, and we did it twice today."

The first half saw the Red Raiders control most of the action, putting up five shots and scoring the match's first goal, a Tim Kaltenberger (Sr., Cologne, Germany) touch in front of the goal line off the assist from Stan van den Beld (Jr., Voorhout, Netherlands) with 18 minutes played.

With nine minutes remaining until halftime, Dordt got a favorable play out of goal, setting up a wide open shot for Brandon Hansen, who sent it over the head of the Raider keeper to knot the score at 1-1.

The intensity ramped up in the second half as Dordt took the lead on a corner kick and own goal, putting the visitors up 2-1. It did not take long for Northwestern to respond as Johannes von Saldern (Sr., Jena, Germany) popped the ball up into the short corner, received by Gerrard Uamai (Sr., Dundalk, Republic of Ireland) who found the back of the net.

Dordt later took their second lead of the day on another corner kick opportunity when Jacob Narkis skied for the header and broke the tie. Minutes later, Pablo Aspas (Sr., Valencia, Spain), playing up near the midfield, pushed it ahead to van den Beld for the clutch goal.

90 minutes was not enough to decide today's contest, as Kobi Baccam (Sr., Hull, Iowa) scored his first-career goal, the game-winner to send the Raiders to the title match.

"Kobi scoring the winner was only appropriate," Swier commented. "His hard work, positive attitude, and team-first mentality are the qualities we needed on the field today if we were going to come back and win. I could not be more proud of this team."
