Raiders Defeated in Conference-Opening Dual

Seth wins major decision; Jenness earns 100th win

MITCHELL, S.D. – Opening Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) action on the road, the Northwestern wrestling team (1-1, 0-1 GPAC) fell to the Dakota Wesleyan Tigers (1-0, 1-0 GPAC). Luke Jenness collected his 100th-career win, becoming the eighth Raider to hit the milestone.

"It was hard for us to find a rhythm. They did a good job from keeping us from getting bonus points at 133 and 197," commented head coach Rik Dahl. "Although we celebrate those wins, in a dual setting, we needed to have a little bit more urgency."

The Tigers led from the start, opening the night with a six-point fall to take a 6-0 lead. Johnny Burnette (So., Spirit Lake, Iowa) gained points back at 133, taking a 9-6 decision to make the overall score 6-3.

After a win by forfeit at 141 put Dakota Wesleyan up 12-3, John Seth (Sr., Warm Beach, Wash.) grabbed the most match points of the night, winning a major decision 26-15. Jenness (Sr., Primghar, Iowa) then won his 100th-career bout, winning by forfeit.

Kaleb Lind (Jr., Lindenhurst, Ill.) had the final Red Raider win of the night, a 6-2 decision to make it 23-21 before Dakota Wesleyan's Cole Hennings won the heavyweight bout to give the Tigers the team dual win, 26-21.

"It was good to see John Seth battle back, being down 12 points and scoring 20+ points to end up winning with a major decision. That was pretty gritty," Dahl said. "We also want to celebrate Luke's 100th win, that's a reflection of a lot of hard work. We'll have another opportunity to compete against three hard teams down in Leavenworth this weekend, we'll see how these guys respond."

Up Next: Northwestern is back on the road this weekend to compete at the Spire Duals, hosted by Saint Mary's (Kan.), on Saturday.
