Northwestern Preps for Top-5 NAIA Showdown at De Valois This Weekend

The two teams battle for the top-spot in the GPAC this season

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The top-ranked National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Northwestern College football team (8-0, 7-0 GPAC) is set for their second-straight National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) clash when the No. 3-ranked Mustangs of Morningside (8-0, 7-0 GPAC) for an undefeated clash at Korver Field at De Valois Stadium. NWC NOTABLES
  • Northwestern welcomes Morningside to Korver Field on Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. kickoff in a top-5 NAIA clash.
  • Head coach Matt McCarty picked up career win No. 75 in the 35-14 win against Dordt last week.
  • NWC has started the season 8-0 for the 10th time in program history and third time under McCarty.
  • Northwestern is one of six unbeaten NAIA schools heading into Week 9 of the season.
  • NWC has tied a program record for most consecutive polls inside the NAIA Top-25 at 72-straight polls this week.
  • Konner McQuillan became the seventh Red Raider to notch 3,000 career rushing yards last week against Dordt.
  • Michael Storey sits fifth in the NAIA in receiving yards per game at 102.5, having four 100+-yard receiving games this season.
  • NWC has recorded an interception in 14-straight games and has forced at least one opponent turnover in 26-straight games.

FAST STARTS
  • Northwestern has gotten off to fast starts in 2023, outscoring opponents 68-10 in the first quarter this season.
  • Only Concordia (Neb.) and Midland has scored on the Red Raider defense in the first quarter.
  • NWC has held six opponents (Drake, Doane, Mount Marty, Hastings, Briar Cliff, Dordt) scoreless in the first 15 minutes of play.
CODY MOSER – THE BALL HAWK
  • Converted cornerback turned safety, Cody Moser has made the transition this season look effortless this season.
  • His six interceptions sits tied for the NAIA lead through the first eight weeks of the season (three-way tie).
  • His two interceptions against Hastings was his first-career multi-interception game.
  • He's now recorded an INT in four-straight games for the Red Raider defense.
  • In his Red Raider career, he's recorded eight interceptions.
NAIA COACHES' POLL
  • In the fifth regular season poll, three GPAC teams continue to be ranked in the top-25: Northwestern (No. 1), Morningside (No. 3), and Dordt (No. 25).
  • Poll 5 marks the 32nd-straight week NWC has been ranked inside the top-5, dating back to May 17, 2021.
  • It's now 72-straight week the Red Raiders have been ranked inside the top-25, tying the program record for most consecutive weeks inside the top-25.
  • For the seventh-straight poll, NWC has received all 18 first-place votes in the NAIA Coaches' Poll.
WEATHER FORECAST
  • The weather forecast is not a particularly bright one for Saturday, with the first forecasted snow of the season in the early morning hours.
  • Temperatures are called to be in the high 20s with winds from N/NE at 5 to 10mph.
  • It'll remain overcast up to kickoff and into the game, being partly to mostly cloudy most of the day.
SERIES HISTORY
  • Morningside leads the all-time series 22-11.
  • The Red Raiders are 7-8 with games played in Orange City.
  • McCarty is 1-8 against the Mustangs in his career and is looking for his first regular season win.
