Defensive Battle Ends in Scoreless Draw

SIOUX CITY, Iowa  – Northwestern (2-3-2, 1-0-1 GPAC) recorded their third consecutive shutout as the Raiders played 90 scoreless minutes with Morningside (3-3-2, 2-0-1 GPAC) on Wednesday night at Elwood Olsen Stadium.

"It was a great battle between two very good teams," said head coach Dan Swier. "We were up for the challenge tonight. Last year the margin between the two teams was razor thin, and the same could be said after this contest."

Neither team held an advantage throughout as the two squads were nearly identical in most statistical categories. Northwestern had three players who recorded two shots each, as James Bolger (Boyle, Republic of Ireland), Joshua Wingfield (Bronx, N.Y.) and Stan van den Beld (Voorhout, Netherlands) each tallied multiple attempts for the Raiders.

"Morningside had the upper hand in the first half, but Marcel Lengert and the rest of our defense did enough to keep them out of the net," Swier noted. "In the second half we threatened to score and had a shot go off the post as the clock expired. I'm proud of the guys for how they competed tonight."

MATCH NOTES
  • Shots came at a premium as Morningside led 9-8 in attempts.
  • Ezekiel Foltz (Sioux Center, Iowa) picked up two saves in goal.
  • Morningside held a 5-4 corner kick advantage.
Up Next: The Raiders will travel to Seward, Nebraska for a conference tilt with Concordia (Neb.) (6-2-0, 1-1-0 GPAC) on Saturday at 3:30 PM.
