Northwestern Defense Dominant in 48-3 Win at Jamestown

Blake Fryar sets new career-high with five touchdown passes

JAMESTOWN, N.D. – On a cool and overcast fall day in North Dakota, the No. 4-ranked Northwestern College football team (2-1, 2-1 GPAC) dominated the University of Jamestown Jimmies (2-2, 1-2 GPAC) in all aspects of the game, leaving North Dakota with the 48-3 victory.

"I think our guys did a good job after a long road trip," noted head football coach Matt McCarty. "I thought UJ did a good job defensively, forcing us to go down the field."

Quarterback Blake Fryar (Sr., Waukee, Iowa) set a new career-high with five touchdown passes this afternoon. Last season he had four games with four touchdown tosses. "He's done a really good job of commanding our offense," said McCarty. "He's not forcing it anywhere and taking what the defense gives him."

Logan Meyer (So., Alvord, Iowa) tied his career-high with 131 yards on the ground on 15 carries. He averaged 8.7 yards per carry with a long of 26 yards. "When Logan (Meyer) runs the football, he punishes the defense," noted McCarty. "We did a good job playing physical and running the football."

Meyer was running with purpose his first few touches, accounting for 36 yards in his first three attempts. His first rush of the day was broken for 19 yards in the heart of the Jimmies defense. The first score of the afternoon was a six-yard touchdown toss from Blake Fryar (Sr., Waukee, Iowa) to Michael Storey (Sr., Spencer, Iowa).

The Red Raider defense was stout in the opening quarter. Nearly picking off two passes, the Jimmies only managed six yards on just six plays. Northwestern tallied 141 yards and picked up nine first downs. "It really starts up front defensively," said McCarty. "We had an interception for touchdown for a touchdown. I was very happy with how our guys competed today!"

Cody Moser (Jr., Rock Valley, Iowa) forced the first turnover of the day inside the Jimmies 20-yard line, as Jaden Snyder (Sr., Larchwood, Iowa) picked up his second recovery of the season. The drive ended three plays as Fryar found Storey for the second time in the contest.

Right before the half, a fake field goal attempt turned into the fourth touchdown of the day. For the first time ever, B. Fryar found his younger brother Parker Fryar (So., Waukee, Iowa) for the 22-yard touchdown reception to take the commanding 27-3 lead.

"Blake did a great job, he was really efficient with the football," again noted McCarty on Fryar's performance. "He was able to find open receivers underneath."

At the halftime break, Northwestern had 17 first downs and 142 yards of total offense, as it was all Red Raiders in the first half. Fryar had thrown for 142 yards at the break, and Meyer had 81 yards on nine rush attempts on the ground.

The first score of the season came thanks to the defense, as Tristan Mulder (So., Rock Valley, Iowa) had a pick-six, returning it 38 yards for the score. Northwestern dominated the second half, putting up 21 points and keeping the Jimmies off the scoreboard the entire second half.

The Red Raider defense was absolutely lights out all afternoon long. The Jimmies were 0-for-10 on third downs on the day. Jamestown snapped the ball just 44 times for only 153 yards of total offense, while punting the ball six times. The Red Raider defense held the Jimmies under the defense's rushing yards allowed per game (59.5), allowing just 52 yards.
