Alternating Goals Leads to 2-2 Draw

ORANGE CITY, Iowa  – Northwestern men's soccer (1-3-1, 0-0-0 GPAC) played to a draw with nonconference opponent York (Neb.) (2-3-1, 0-0-0 KCAC) on Saturday, after the two teams went back and forth on scoring opportunities throughout the contest.

The Raiders got on the board early as Niklas Fitter (Sankt Augustin, Germany) drew a foul in the box in the third minute and proceeded to send a penalty kick attempt past a diving Cristofer Monje for the opening goal of the game.

Northwestern held the lead for much of the first half before the Panthers tied the game with just over five minutes to go before the break, when Nathan Lira netted his first goal of the season off of a header pass by Johan Rodriguez.

With the score tied 1-1 at the half, the Red Raiders broke the tie in the first minute of the second half, as Tim Kaltenberger (Cologne, Germany) drove into the middle and pushed the ball into the back of the net. York would answer with 30 minutes remaining in the second when Patrick Nunes scored his first goal of the 2022 campaign.

Both teams had chances late but were unable to capitalize as 90 minutes came to a close with neither team pulling ahead on the scoreboard.

"I thought tonight's result was fair," said Northwestern head coach Dan Swier. "We didn't play well enough to win, but we scored two goals and didn't deserve to lose either. Tim scored a nice goal early in the second half but we just didn't have the grit and determination to keep them out of our net."
