No. 3 Raiders to Face Morningside to Open 2022 Campaign

Raiders and Mustangs clash in Week One for the second time in three seasons

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The Northwestern College football team (0-0, 0-0 GPAC) opens the 2022 campaign this Saturday, September 3, visiting Sioux City to battle the defending National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national champions and top-ranked Morningside Mustangs (0-0, 0-0 GPAC) at Elwood Olsen Stadium.

  • Northwestern is 40-22-1 in season openers, and 4-2 under Matt McCarty.
  • 2022 marks the second time in three seasons the Raiders and Mustangs will open the season against each other.
  • NWC has 14 10+ wins seasons in program history and are tied-for-19th in the NAIA in program wins (446).
  • McCarty picked up his 50th career win last season with the 63-28 win over arch-rival Dordt on October 30.
  • Northwestern has been ranked inside the NAIA top-5 for a program record 14 straight weeks, dating back to the end of the 2020 season.

PLAYERS TO WATCH
The Red Raiders return their leading passer (B. Fryar), rusher (McQuillan), and receiver (C. Moser) from the 2021 season. Blake Fryar (Sr., Waukee, Iowa) is slated to make his ninth-career start to open the 2022 season after throwing for over 2,000 yards with 25 touchdowns last season.
 
In the rushing attack, keep an eye on the top-two leading rushers from a season ago as Logan Meyer (So., Alvord, Iowa) and Konner McQuillan (Jr., Leavenworth, Kan.) both return to the backfield. McQuillan rushed for 854 yards and 10 touchdowns last season.
 
On defense, Parker Fryar (So., Waukee, Iowa) will look to wreak havoc for the Red Raiders after notching 100+ tackles each of the last two seasons. Jaden Snyder (Sr., Larchwood, Iowa) and Noah Van't Hof (Sr., Lester, Iowa) will look to continue being quarterback's nightmare, both returning at safety.

SERIES HISTORY
Morningside holds the 21-11 overall series lead, winning last time out in the NAIA Football Championship Series (FCS) Semifinals 28-19 in Sioux City back in December 2021. The last win for Northwestern came on May 1, 2021 in the 2020 NAIA FCS Semifinals that was moved to the spring due to COVID-19, the Red Raiders prevailed 44-41.
