Alexa Johnson Nets Two as Raiders Start Season with Win

Kaelin Alons becomes the sixth keeper in program history to notch 200+ career saves

FULTON, Mo. – The Northwestern College women's soccer team (1-0-0, 0-0-0 GPAC) started the 2022 season on a winning note, downing American Midwest Conference (AMC) William Woods University (0-1-0, 0-0-0 AMC) behind two goals from freshman forward Alexa Johnson. Head coach Shannon Andringa listed five freshmen in her Starting XI in the first match of the season.

"I thought today was a great starting point for the season! The girls displayed determination and I was proud of the way they fought until the end," noted Andringa. "It was a team win and really fun to watch them start to build unity."

With her first save in the fourth minute, senior goalkeeper Kaelin Alons (Orange City, Iowa) became the sixth keeper in NWC women's soccer program history to notch 200+ career saves. With her seven saves on the night, she sits sixth in program history with 206 career saves.

"Congrats to Kaelin on her 200-career saves accomplishment," said Andringa. "She has been a steady presence on our back line and I am excited to see how many saves she adds to that number!"

Northwestern got off to a hot start in the match as freshman Johnson (Spencer, Iowa) got off the first shot of the match – and the season – in the second minute. Near the end of the first half, Johnson would start the scoring on the evening in the 35th minute, netting her first-career goal on an unassisted attempt. Northwestern put up two shots in the first 45 minutes, both by Johnson but still found a way to take the 1-0 lead into the break. William Woods put up seven shots in the first half but Alons was solid in the net, recording five saves.

"I'm really excited for Lexi and I think today set the tone for the rest of the year," concluded Andringa. "She is gritty and that shined today! What a great start to her college career!"

William Woods would come out of the halftime break and net the equalizer in the 53rd minute as Sam Poehlmann would make the score 1-1 off a blocked shot. The following minutes would be chippy, as a pair of yellow cards were awarded but Northwestern would respond to the WWU equalizer.

Off a free kick attempt in the 76th minute, Johnson would strike again to give the Raiders a 2-1 advantage, as senior Julie Dunlap (Des Moines, Iowa) would be credited with the game-winning assist. The Owls leading scorer from 2021 would get off one of the last two shots of the match for the home squad. The final attempt came in the 83rd minute for WWU off a corner kick, but the Red Raider defense would hold out to secure the 2-1 win.
