Red Raiders, Blue Hawks Battle in NAIA First Round on Saturday

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The No. 3-ranked Northwestern College football team (9-1, 9-1 GPAC) are making their sixth-straight trip to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Football Championship Series (FCS), set to host the No. 17-ranked Dickinson State Blue Hawks (8-2, 6-0 NSAA) for third time in the last five seasons in the First Round.

RAIDERS MAKE SIXTH-STRAIGHT APPEARANCE IN NAIA FCS
  • The ranked No. 3 Red Raiders are set to host a First Round FCS game for the fifth-straight season.
  • Saturday marks the third meeting between NWC and DSU in the NAIA FCS, and third in the last five seasons. The series is tied 1-1.
  • In the current nine-game win streak, the Raiders have held opponents to 10 points or less in each contest.
NWC NOTABLES
  • Northwestern has outscored opponents 430-95 in their 10 games.
  • NWC is 60-2 since 2002 when the team rushes for 200+ yards and 6-1 in 2022.
  • In the month of November under head coach Matt McCarty the Red Raiders are 14-8, including a 4-4 mark in NAIA Football Championship Series (FCS) games.
  • The Red Raiders hold a +14-turnover margin through 10 games.
  • NWC continues to lead the NAIA in 3rd down conversions (55%).

PARKER FRYAR TABBED GPAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR
  • Leading the team with 85 tackles this season, 47 of which were solo tackles.
  • The marks sit sixth and tied-for-fourth in the GPAC, respectively.
  • His 8.5 tackles per game ranked third in the league.
  • He leads the team with 8.0 tackles for loss and also recorded 1.5 sacks (T4th on the team).
GRAMSTAD CONTINUES TO CLIMB RUSHING RECORD BOOKS
  • Sophomore quarterback Jalyn Gramstad sits third in the NAIA, and second in the GPAC, with his 16 rushing touchdowns this season (10 games).
  • The 16 rushing scores sits fifth in program history for rushing touchdowns in a season by an individual.
  • Dave Perrigo holds the program's single-season record with 24 back in 2000.
  • Gramstad has the most by any Red Raider since former running back Jacob Kalogonis had 15 in 2017.
RAIDERS IN THE NAIA FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES (FCS)
  • Northwestern is making their 24th appearance in the NAIA FCS, holding an all-time record of 26-21 (.553).
  • In program history, the Red Raiders have brought two national titles back to Orange City (1973, 1983).
  • Four trips to the national title game (1972, '79, 1984, 2020) & five semifinal trips (1982, '85, 1994, 2000, 2021).
  • Under head coach Matt McCarty, the Raiders hold a 6-5 record in FCS play and have made one semifinal appearance (2021) and a national title game appearance (2020).
LAST MEETING VS. DICKINSON STATE
  • The last time these two met was in the FCS First Round of the 2020 season, played in April 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
  • Northwestern won the game 31-7 in Orange City, jumping out to a 14-0 lead midway through the second quarter.
  • Tyson Kooima threw for 263 yards (1 TD) and rushed for 100 yards (2 TD).
  • Noah Van't Hof (12) and Parker Fryar (11) led the defense with double digit tackles, as the Raiders recorded FOUR interceptions.

  • The Raiders and Blue Hawks have played four times in series history, with the series tied up at 2-2.
  • Three of the four previous games have been played in Orange City (2017, 2018, 2020-21), with Northwestern going 2-1 in those games.
