Raiders Draw with Dordt in Physical Battle

ORANGE CITY, Iowa  – Northwestern (5-4-5, 4-1-3 GPAC) and Dordt (5-2-6, 3-0-4 GPAC) came toe-to-toe in a match that could determine the teams' respective positions in the upcoming Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Tournament. Although both sides had opportunities late in the match, the clock rolled down with no score as the Raiders and Defenders tied 0-0.

Northwestern controlled possession for much of the first half, as the Raiders outshot the Defenders 9-6 to go with a 5-3 corner kick advantage. In the second half, however, the field shifted to find Dordt hold an 8-6 shot advantage.

The Raiders opened the second half with shots on goal by Joshua Wingfield (Smyrna, Del.), Niklas Fitter (Sankt Augustin, Germany), and Tim Kaltenberger (Cologne, Germany).

Dordt had a scoring opportunity in the final minute when Tyson Reitsma had open field in front of him, sending the shot wide right.

"Dordt is a much-improved team this year," said Raider head coach Dan Swier. "We knew we were going to have to earn it tonight and we were not wrong. Our guys did well to keep the clean sheet. That said, we didn't capitalize on our scoring chances the way we needed to. Hopefully we can figure it out down the stretch."

MATCH NOTES
  • Shot attempts were close as the Raiders led 15-12 in the category.
  • Pablo Aspas (Valencia, Spain) had six saves in goal for Northwestern.
  • Northwestern had three players with three shot attempts each in Fitter, Wingfield, and Stan van den Beld (Voorhout, Netherlands).
  • The Red Raiders have not lost since September 24 after winning three and tying two in their last five outings.
