Mackrey's Hat Trick Leads Raiders Past Clarke

Juan Mackrey recorded his first career hat-trick in leading the Northwestern College men's soccer team to a 5-2 win against Clarke in the Raiders' spring opener. Northwestern extends its win streak to seven games and improves to 11-3 overall.

Mackrey, who is now tied with James Bolger for the team lead in goals scored (7), netted his first of three goals during the 21st minute off an assist from Brennan Haggerty to give Northwestern a 1-0 lead. Just two minutes later however, the Pride tied the game with a goal by Juan Arevalo.

Tied 1-1, Northwestern went ahead for good with the first of two goals during the final 12 minutes of the first half when Philippe Patri scored off an assist from Tim Katenberger at the 33rd minute. Kaltenberger netted his first collegiate goal just shy of the 42nd minute to give the Raiders a 3-1 halftime lead.

The host Pride made it a one goal game when Charlie Mendez snuck a shot past Raider keeper Ezekiel Foltz with five minutes gone by in the second half. From that point, Mackrey and Kaltenberger took the game over, connecting on the final two goals for Coach Swier's squad. The duo's first goal came during the 79th minute, giving the Raiders a 4-2 advantage. Less than two minutes later, Mackrey and Kaltenberger hooked up again to complete the scoring.

Foltz stopped five Clarke University shots to earn the win in goal; Zach Carr preserved the win in goal, playing the final 18 minutes.

Northwestern has not lost since Oct. 24 and will put its seven-game win streak on the line on Saturday, March 27 against William Penn in Oskaloosa.
