The Northwestern College men's tennis team swept all three doubles matches to earn a 5-4 win over Wartburg (Iowa) in a non-conference match played tonight at the Meirink Family Tennis Center in Waverly, Iowa.
Brian Vanden Berg and
Juan Mackrey picked up an 8-5 win in the top doubles slot while
Chris Jelken and
Bradley Bourland earned an 8-2 win at No.2. Jack and
Noah Roisum combined for an 8-6 win at No.3 and stayed unbeaten on the season.
Mackrey and Bourland also won their respective singles matches at No.2 and No.5; Bourland earned a thrilling 13-11 tie-break win in the third set.
"We came out and played great in doubles, sweeping all three matches to take the first three points of the match," said Northwestern Head Coach
Monte Tilgner. "Our number one doubles team of Brian VandenBerg and Juan Mackery won the last three games in a row to break a 5-5 tie and avenge an earlier loss to the top doubles team from Warburg a month ago.
Chris Jelken and
Bradley Bourland also avenged an earlier loss and easily won their doubles match. In singles, we struggled but won 2 of the 4 matches to win the team match overall with a score of 5-4.
Bradley Bourland secured the win with a 13-11 win in a super-tiebreaker after splitting the first two sets. Juan Mackery had a dominating performance in his #2 singles match.
Northwestern is now 3-3 this season and avenged an earlier loss to Wartburg.
