ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The No. 20-ranked Northwestern College men's soccer team (16-2-1, 10-1 GPAC) is set to host (RV) Hastings College Broncos (11-4-2, 8-2-1), the No. 3-seed, in this year's Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) tournament championship match on Thursday, November 11 at the NWC Soccer Complex.
The Raiders tied the program's record for wins in a single season with the win on Saturday night against the Morningside Mustangs to clinch a spot in their first tournament final since 2007. Northwestern also had 16 wins (16-5 on the season) back in 2004, the year of the first conference title.
Regular Season Meeting
The Raiders only regular season GPAC loss came to the hands of the Hastings Broncos back on October 23, on Senior Day at the NWC Soccer Complex.
The only goal of the match came in the 11
th minute, as Hastings' Tyler Mase found the back of the net to give the Broncos the 1-0 victory. Northwestern was only able to muster two shots the entire match, with one of them being on-goal.
The rematch and stage is set. Northwestern will look to reverse the script yet again on an opponent.
How They Got Here
Northwestern, the co-regular season champions, played host to the No. 8-seed Mount Marty Lancers to open the GPAC tournament back on Nov. 3. In a reverse of the regular season meeting between the two teams, the Raiders controlled the match from the start, prevailing 5-0 with the final two goals coming in the last 31 seconds of the match.
Northwestern faced Morningside on Saturday in the semifinals, and the match played up to the hype. Knotted up at 1-1 after the first 45 minutes, it wouldn't be until the 70
th minute that the Raiders would net the game-winning goal.
The Broncos entered the GPAC tournament as the No. 3 seed after putting up an 8-2-1 mark in league play. The only losses of the conference slate came to the University of Jamestown (2-1) and co-regular season champions Briar Cliff (2-1, OT). Hastings took care of the No. 6-seed Midland in the Quarterfinals, advancing with a 4-1 victory.
The rematch with Briar Cliff would again go into extra time, this time with the Broncos prevailing with a goal in the final minute of the first overtime period (99:49) to send Hastings back to Orange City for the second time this season.
