FREMONT, Neb. – The Northwestern College women's soccer team (4-9-1, 1-6-1 GPAC) was defeated in double overtime 1-0 by the Midland University Warriors (7-6, 4-3 GPAC) on a late free kick.
The first half saw some back and forth action as each team tried to establish a rhythm and hold onto possession. As the first half wore on the Raiders defense continued to make life hard on the Midland attack and kept them off the board. Junior keeper
Kaelin Alons (Orange City, Iowa/Unity Christian) was able to tally multiple saves in the first half as she anchored the Raider defense. Towards the end of the half the Raiders' attack found their footing and were able to get four consecutive shot attempts off as the half came to a close with both teams deadlocked at 0.
As the second half began the Raider offense picked up right where they left off and continued to put pressure on the Warrior defense.
Emily Hurley (Sr., Pleasant Hill, Iowa/Grand View Chrisitan) was able to get multiple shots off early but couldn't quite convert. Neither defense would allow the opposing offense to gain an advantage and the second half ended still tied at 0.
Overtime saw more of the same with both teams putting together their respective attacks but neither could find the back of the net. A corner in the 93
rd minute resulted in an on frame attempt from the Warriors and a game-saving save from Alons to keep the Raiders alive and the second overtime was eminent. Hurley was able to get a shot attempt on goal in the 107
th minute that was saved by the Warriors keeper Mackenzie Smith. In the 108
th minute a foul just outside the box gave Midland a free kick attempt. As the Midland players were still shuffling around and getting set a quick attempt from Brittany Llanes found the back of the net and won the game for the Warriors.
The Raiders were out shot for the game 21-14. Alons made nine saves in the net for the Raiders and her record is now 3-5 in goal.
